In the link you posted, he claims that the image preview was showing in his viewfinder...that can be disabled in the menus and was one of the first things I checked. The R5 now offers this option for the viewfinder and back screen separately - which was a very nice addition. But back to the point; the performance of tracking a subject really suffers when you enable image preview in the EVF. The moment you stop taking a photo in an action sequence, you see an image and can't see the real world which causes a difficult recovery to find the subject again once you resume AF or metering and get the EVF activated again....Show more →
I think all the mirrorless cameras including the M models have the option to turn off image preview in the EVF and LCD

Everyone of us that called out the 7D2 for twitchy (to put it nicely) AF got laughed at. That camera is as twitchy as they come.
Yeah, I went straight to the D500 and didn't look back. After my love-hate relationship with my 7D I wasn't going to go through that again. Not just AF, D500 is a better camera all round and with the 500 PF it doesn't get much better for the price.

Are you talking about EVF wake-up lag? I already have a plan for that. I am going to disable the EVF sensor and use the M-Fn button to toggle back and forth. I'll use the LCD display when I need to. I'm also going to disable the playback.
When birding I'll leave the power on indefinitely. After 6 seconds the EVF shuts down so neither it or the LCD are draining power. When I see a bird I'll press the shutter or BBF and by the time I get the camera to my eye the EVF will be awake and ready to go. This way you are by-passing the LCD waking up first, then switching to the EVF which causes a delay.

I think Visceral Image was talking about the Image Review setting where the camera immediately shows you the last shot as soon as you stop firing. This is a setting one should be turning off immediately when getting the camera. The other setting to immediately turn off (as I've heard it is on by default) is the Continuous Focus setting where the camera is always refocusing and preparing for when you tell it to focus.

Sorry I called Image Review - Playback by mistake. I disabled that on my R last September to avoid the thing Visceral is talking about. Yes Continuous AF is not good for stills shooting. I'm not sure which is the factory setting but on my first day out with my R AF was messed up. Continuous AF was enabled and I can't remember if I enabled it inadvertently or not.

Geoff got me on track with your post and yes I agree with you.
