It's easy to criticize Lloyd but he does have a knack of tearing apart lenses. Although he is critical of some aspects of the new 85 he ultimately does come to the conclusion that most won't be concerned of negatives.

I will have mine tomorrow..... always a crap shoot..... so I will see.

I finally got to evaluate the image samples from the lens, and it seems to me like the AF is not hitting very often when using eye-AF on my a7R III. When it does land, it seems like the results are not nearly as sharp as everyone is claiming for this lens. Useable, yes, but not as good as I'm seeing in sample shots. Is there something wrong with my copy?

Mine is hitting both eyeAF and regular AF consistently, sharpness-wise I also cannot complain, though I'm only looking at the results on 24 mpix.

I purchased this lens for the purpose of using it mostly for landscape so my concerns may not be the same as other posters. I mainly want the lens to be centered and capable of edge to edge sharpness by at least f2.8. I rarely use AF and have found it to be very unreliable for my use. I feel for other users that must have accurate and consistent AF.

I am so far amazed as to how sharp the lens is at f1.4 edge to edge - anywhere. It depends on accurate focus but I'm used to that since I use my R7M4 often on my Actus which requires always checking edges/tops/bottoms for alignment. This lens is a new threshold for me. Manual focus feels like a mechanical helical - very smooth and repeatable. The weight and size is very welcome. By f2.8 focus can be looser and still have everything targeted in focus. This copy has the very slightest hint of softness on the left hand side at f1.4 which disappears with sharpening. Very amazing..... would like to try another copy but I have learned my lessons by sending back lenses that in hindsight were the best of the bunch and regretting it.

All in all a remarkable lens.

Yes, it's so sharp and apo-grade clean in its output . It actually got me thinking of selling my 50mm and 135mm, as it's hard to take the Sigma off the camera due to its mix of optical qualities, handling/operation and relative compactness...

As much as I love what Im seeing with this lens I cant help but agree with Fred at this point. Id probably live without the last ounce of sharpness in favour of the GM's bokeh. Im a bit torn on this one.....

'apo-grade clean in its output'

Scepticism is normally warranted but the toughest test I've seen is the ruler images cameralabs use, and the new Sigma does about as well as the APO Zeiss lenses, and better than the Otus 100/1.4 and cleans up the GM 85/1.4 and Batis 85mm as well:

Zeiss lens listing (look under 'quality'):

https://www.cameralabs.com/zeiss-lenses/

Sadly they appear not to have heard of Voigtlander lenses but that's industry par for the course. APO-ness is a continuum, and it's very sensitive to assembly and copy variation. Kudos to Sigma. They will sell a lot of this one.

Nice pictures, Peire. To my eyes the rendering looks like that of the Voigtlanders for Sony, which is a very good thing.

Thanks, Peire, those look great! This E-mount iteration has fixed the LCA problem of the previous Art.

The lens is really very good, though lacking this delicate veiling at around f1,4 - 1,8 that GM 85/1.4 has and that I prefer for portraiture and wide open "environmental" shots.

Quick question I was hoping someone could answer. I know the lens is supposed to be weather sealed with seals all around but after reading about the Sigma 24-70 internal dust issues several people had I feel a bit less confident about the Sigma weather sealed claim (granted that's only one lens with the issue from what i've read). I would like to know how robust the weather sealing are on Sigma primes.

How good would the weather sealing be on the 85mm f1.4 paired with the A7R IV.
I'm currently deciding between getting the Sigma 85mm f1.4 for my Sony or the Fujifilm 50mm f1 for my X-T4. I just need a lens in that focal length that is better weather sealed.

Took it out Wednesday here in Shanghai in the open pouring rain on my 7r3, out for a total of 50 mins to an hour
and it perform excellent (previously a 5D4 user) I was nervous but took the chance, the rain was heavy and the wind enough to shake my tripod from time to time.

Got home and no water AT ALL on the sensor/Flange or on the lens, it’s tighter then bolts on and Oldsmobile Cutlass.

As for dust so far a little on the hood but aside from that zero.

My daughter wasn't co-operative in the park, so I only got 2 photos before she made it clear she wasn't interested in being my test subject.

Its pretty damn sharp. No editing

Just a quick note that it's important to 'ALWAYS' test your lens. My new 85mm DN is probably as perfect as it ever can be without buying 10 samples. I test thoroughly so I'm fairly confident.

As an example DPReview has a posted gallery of this lens that, to me, shows their sample fairly decentered. It can be seen here (https://www.dpreview.com/sample-galleries/1444131463/sigma-85mm-f1-4-dg-hsm-art-sample-gallery/0117719130)

I downloaded the file in raw format and it's very clear that the right hand side is very soft compared to the left hand side. I'm surprised they actually didn't catch this......

Had to resort to bribery to get a couple of test photos with the new Sigma 85mm f/1.4 while at the park, no other opportunities due to lockdowns here. It was kept to a bare minimum due to the standard terms and conditions of ice cream bribery which included a maximum of 5 photos to be taken within exactly 10 seconds before said child renaged on conditions.

The close up is a crop fo the half body shot to show sharpness.

Thanks for sharing this. I feel like I keep seeing people wanting to discredit this lens, but your images show its capabilities very well. To me it’s a lens that obviously has its flaws, but is very good. I enjoy shooting with it and its results.

Not sure what they are complaining about, it's a spectacular lens based on my short term experiences with it.

Most of the people I have seen to date seem to be more interested in justifying their current purchase of the GM. It's the same outcome as when the Tamron 28-75 came out (and people will trying to justify why the GM was so much better), and then when the Sigma 24-70 (both the GM and Tamron users were trying to justify their purchases.

People feel threatened that there may be a better lens out there, and in an attempt to make themselves feel comfortable, they pull it down seeking anything that may be a problem. The irony of which is that the Sigma being good doesn't make their old lens any less capable of producing amazing photos.

If someone has an existing GM lens and wants to actively participate in a Sigma thread, that should be the first indication of it. Why would they actively go to a Sigma thread if they have no interest in purchasing the lens, other than to try pull it down. What they fail to realise is that these types of things are better for all of us. Competition is good.
