Joshua, great shots and sequence, you didn't get the original angle, but you still got some shots, well done.

If I swallowed one of those crayfish whole I would be dancing around too, although it might not be a dance of joy.

Thank you very much, Dave! Ha ha, you and I will have to be selective and we need some kind of nutcracker to handle the shell. And of course, more boiled for our taste and don't forget the drawn butter .

I've taught crayfish anatomy to probably 1000+ students over the years, and when they molt they actually reabsorb some of the shell's calcium carbonate. As a result, the new shell following the molt is rather soft. Furthermore, calcium carbonate becomes calcium and carbon dioxide when mixed with acid. I guess the real problem is swallowing the hard object so that it can get into the stomach...

Ah, yes, you are a teacher. I remember it now. Thank you for the explanation.

These are great, Joshua, terrific behavioral sequence! I think #1 is very beautiful with the translucent crayfish. And the reflection.
Thank you for your kind words, Shirley!

Just excellent. Crunch time. Looks like those high ISO settings worked veery well for you.
Thank you very much, Dennis! The lighting conditions were not that good in the morning and I wanted to freeze some if not all the actions, including the water splashes .

Great shots in tricky light, with cool behavior on display! TFS.
Unbelievable action photos. My favorites are the ones where you appear to on the same plane (more or less) as the bird. Interesting discussion about diet. As I understand it, the "hoodie" has a supercharged gizzard, enabling it to handily take care of those crayfish.

Dave, thank you very much for your kind words! Yes, pretty much only hooded mergansers can have crayfish in their diet while some other mergansers eat mostly fish. I have learned something new even at my age .
