I know the new Tammy starts at f/2.8, but how long does it stay there and what does it change to over it’s zoom range? I’m thinking about picking one up as a hiking zoom, but I also want the 70-180 for fast af and portrait use. Hard to justify both at the same time, but I’m guessing the 28-200 doesn’t stay fast very long....

Actually does MUCH better than most super zooms, which IMO makes it a great option.
Basically jumps up to the next 1/3 stop about half way between marked focal lengths. So around 32mm, 40mm, 60mm, 85mm, 120mm, 150mm it steps up in aperture according to the body.

Thanks that’s just what I needed. Hmmm. I also have the 28-75. If I parted with it for the 28-200, I’d only be losing a stop at 70mm. I guess I just feel compelled to always have a fast normal zoom....
Yea, my thinking as well, it’s pretty compelling. I like Nikon Z as well, was looking at their 24-200, it’s to f/6.3 by about 60-70mm already, more like typical super zooms, kind of a bummer.
I will say, I looked at the 28-75 and 28-200 at similar apertures and the 28-75 looks a bit more blur even at similar apertures. So it’s not quite just a stop, but anyway as a super zoom it does very well.

If you already have the 28-75 might make more sense to keep it if you are adding the 70-180 anyway.
According to Dustin Abbott, another thing you will lose is bokeh quality, which is better on other tamron lenses even at the same focal length and same aperture.

Yeah in a way it does make more sense to go 28-75 and 70-180. I was just hoping to get a nice light hiking kit of samyang 18 (already have) and 28-200. Definitely don’t want to do long hikes with the 18, 28-75, AND 70-180.
