It can trade blows with Sigma 28-70 but it's not as sharp as Tamron 70-180 (i have both). That being said it's less then half of the weight of those two lenses put together and offers even better range (not by much but still). It's an excelent light, all in one lens for hiking or any other travel when you want to pack light.

Hmm may need to try this lens for hiking. With my 17-28 I could reduce my lenses by one if the IQ matches the Sigma 28-70 and Tamron 70-180
Last week was the first time I used it hiking and it was great. I could see pairing it with an a7c to loose a little more weight but having it paired with a an R or A1 gives you a lot of flexibility.
I'm starting to wonder if I should have bought this instead of the 70-300mm. Checking out samples, I don't see much difference between the two and I rarely go above 200mm.
28-200 is sharper than 70-300 in the center but especially (much sharper) in the corners in the overlapping range. However you get additional 100 mm on the long end and the lens is like 30% cheaper here then 28-200; thou 28-70 range imo is very useful for me.
I find 28-200 to be an excelent all in one lens for any travel/walk around photography. Outside of BIF you can shot pretty much everything with it; even semi macro. I doubt i will sell it even after i buy the upcoming T35-150/F2-2.8.
Nice spider... The only thing about this lens I don't like is its lack of macro capability... I've tried extension tubes but I couldn't make much of a difference with them... was also thinking about trying a diopter lens. This photo is pretty good, how did you do it? I presume it's cropped a lot...

Can't have everything. This lens is already almost "all-in-one" with great IQ.
That being said, this lens for non macro has really nice magnification of 1:3 at wide end and since you can focus at only 19 cm you get very decent results when combained with high resolution body (for cropping). That spider picture is cropped but not really all the way, there is still room for more. It was taken with A7R III. Thou it will never be 1:1 macro even with extension tubes (you can hit like 1:2 or close to it).

A few shots with the Tamron 28-200 from the Sandwich, Illinois, USA Fair.
Not criticizing anybody's artistic vision here but what is going on with the blue outline on the spectators in the first one? CA exaggerated by post processing?
