p.1 #1 · Young Native American Dancers

Congratulations to AGeoJO for winning Feature Thread of the Week with 2 votes - View Previous Winners

I had the opportunity to take images of a gathering of Native American people a while back. It was a multi-tribe pow-wow, where a lot of tribes came together to dance, sing, socialize, and honor their American Indian culture/heritage. What an eye-opening experience it was!

I enjoyed the experience very much and as expected, I ended up taking a lot of images but I am sharing only several of young dancers here for now. Those youthful spirited dancers, as young as 5 years, during that event were truly remarkable. And yes, they danced to live Native American music of mostly drum beats with vocals that sounded like chanting.

Please feel free to leave any feedback and thank you for stopping by,
Joshua

I find the musical sound of the cones attached to their outfits -- most obvious in #5 -- to be mesmerizing. The cones are made from chewing tobacco can lids. Great photography, Joshua.

Enjoyable set, but doesn't rise to the level of your Bali photos (where you set high standards).

Really beautiful photographs, Joshua. The kids and their costumes are just incredible. The light is not too shabby either (extreme understatement).

Were you able to isolate and work with the kids one on one or are these just serendipitous grabs?

Thank you very much, GoodEgg! I forgot to mention something about the jingle outfit in my original post. Thank you for reminding me.

Thank you very much, Rajan! Understandably so - the set from Bali was a mixed of posed and actual life performances over several visits. Here, it was strictly life performance without any interaction with the dancers at any kind over a few hours.

Bill, thank you very much! The images here were captured 100% during life performances. I did talk to the father of that boy in the first image about being able to get more isolated images with less cluttered background. But somehow, he politely declined. It was quite hectic that day though. So, I just dropped it and I focused on taking serendipitous grabs. Later on the day though, I got the impression that he might have thought that I was a working photographer and that I wanted to sell images to him. I had quite a bit of gear with me that day and that was enough for him to get that impression .

I remember that! It was a fun and colorful shoot. The conditions were difficult mostly because of the busy backgrounds/surroundings and sometimes harsh midday lighting, but you did a very commendable job!
