As with many images, there are a number of ways to slice & dice them. I like what you did here, making it unique.
The shot Greg proposed would work nicely too, but is somewhat cliché. If you're only going to have the sailboats, I would leave them where they are in the frame and clone out the surfer.
Great image Madeleine! I really like the boats, as framed, in the photo. Now I agree that this composition is likable in the duality of the surfboarder "in" or "out" of the frame.
This lake brings many excellent photo ops for you and you do take advantage of the lake!!

Like this, quite a few sailors also use paddleboards as transportation from their boats. Wonder what a square crop with the paddleboard and that 1st yellow sailboat from the left would look like.
