Dug this up from a trove of negs I shot at the Monterey Jazz Fest somewhere around 1980 or so. Could have been a year or two earlier. One of the few times I skipped the drum scanner and went straight to copying the neg with a macro lens. Worked pretty well.

My gosh Peter!! I just spent close to an hour just mesmerized by your website! Brought many, MANY memories to mind and many MANY friends into my thoughts. Many were my peers who I idolized and a few are my friends. Some I had the extreme pleasure to meet and jam with....years ago!
I am more than envious of your talents, musically and photographically!
Well done!!
Dan

That's very kind of you Dan. Even after over twenty years of scanning legacy film images I'm continually surprised that I keep finding "new" images to revive. Now I have to see what else there is in that pile of film.

Denny. Pretty sure it was Tri-X developed in HC-110 Dilution B, which is what I used a lot back then. Likely camera and lens is a Nikon FM with a 180mm 2.8 ED, but that'a just a guess. There was nothing tricky about it. Actually when I found the neg last week I was shocked that it seemed to have ample exposure. So many of those from that era were on the underexposed side but not this. And this was pretty near the beginning of when I started shooting live music - late 1970's or very early 80's. The earliest serious shot I have is George Thorogood in a tiny club in Santa Cruz, Ca. in '77. Hopefully I'm still getting better at it. Ha. Actually this is an area where equipment does make a difference and for the last 15 years or so I have owned a Canon 200mm 1.8 and while equipment doesn't make the photographer, it can certainly help, especially in low light.

Another fine image Peter. I'm jealous of all the great artists you've met and heard.
I'm working on camera scanning as well. I have an old Leitz Valoy stand with a Focoslide attachment. I've tried different lenses, but right now I'm liking the results I'm getting from the 50mm Summicron head that was part of the Focoslide. I picked up some extension tubes for it years ago so I can copy 1:1.

That's cool Doug. Have you measured those LEDs for Kelvin and CRI? Just curious. I used a Just Normlicht light box but since this was black and white the CRI didn't matter. I'll stick a meter on it and see what it says. I shot with a Canon 5DSR and a Canon 135mm T/S-E Macro with an extension tube and I was surprised at how well that lens performed.
