Hi Juha,
Thanks for doing this. These are great side by side examples demonstrating the issue. I intend to do something similar when I get my SE copy.
Just to comment on what you wrote above. If your 35/1.2 SE copy is sharper at center, that likely means it's a better copy and the discrepancy isn't due to Sony's thicker sensor stack. They should actually have identical performance at center.
When testing my 35/1.2 III VM copy on the Sony, I do see induced field curvature when the focused subject is at close or mid-field distance and elements from the OOF area location around edge appear sharp.
Much less (if any) at infinity distance though.
This can be seen on many of your samples. Here is one where induced FC is very apparent.
If one goes through your comparison and only pays attention to the edge OOF areas of the frame, it's very easy to know which is which...The SE version will have softer OOF edges and the VM version will have sharper OOF edges due to induced FC. The differences are not night and day but it's noticeable....Show more →
Hi Fred,
Thanks ! I didn't do a proper test trying to see any sharpness differences at center vs. off-center. I was focusing about halfway between center and far edge (in portrait orientation) with those statues when I noticed it. I've been very happy with the sharpness of my VM lens wide open when shooting it on my Sigma fp though (off center as well) and I've shot it more often with that camera. Anyway, I'll do some additional testing later to see if there's a noticeable difference between center and off center sharpness with the VM on my A9.
Will be interesting to see your findings when you get the SE
I'm thinking of swapping my 50/1.2 Nokton for an SE version later as I really like the size and weight of the 35/1.2 SE in comparison to the slightly bigger and heavier original 40/1.2 and 50/1.2. Somehow getting the lens weight below 400g makes a big difference for me and I tend to use the heavier CV lenses a lot lens often.

Yes, the lighter the better!
I will keep the CV 35/1.2 III VM for the Leica (and perhaps sometimes use it on the Sony) and get the CV 40/1.2 SE for the Sony.

I know Cosina makes primes, but I sure hope they would start making some zooms.
Modern day versions of the C/Y 35-70 and 100-300 and a nice 14-24.
I would be ecstatic, if they made a reasonably priced 35-70 F4.

So Fred, did you receive one for tests ?

I might get the 40/1.2 SE just for the lower weight and slightly smaller size over my current 40/1.2.
I ain't gettin' any younger and I'll take all I can get for weight and size reduction.
