This kind of move is enough to get me back into Sony. Aesthetically I like the scalloped focus ring but hate it when trying to focus with a finger. Hopefully the throw is slightly shorter and lighter as well.
Usually companies charge more for a more focused "purist" version but glad to see Cosina isn't like them. Really respectable and forward thinking.

What am I missing?
For example, going by the listed prices in JPY, converted to USD, the new 50mm F1.2 SE is ~$1K USD. The current FE 50mm F1.2 is ~$999 USD.

The Japanese price has tax built-in, the price is likely to be $899 USD, but we will have to wait until it is listed to know for sure. Just based on the japanese price the new SE is definitely listed for less money.

Hi Steve! Makes sense from a biz perspective to differentiate the product lines and price cine lenses at the higher prices the market would bear. From my perspective, I'd rather VC amortize the cost of development and production fo the declickable aperture across all their lenses (even if most users won't use them) as I rarely shoot video in a full rig set up with follow focus and really just need the declickable aperture on the GM and select VC lenses.
I've never sent in a lens to Duclos... can they declick all/most modern MF glass?

Yes, they can de-click almost all modern MF glass, and they can add focus rings too.

Just a thought: Perhaps Voigtlander could have kept the option for aperture ring de-clicking while still decreasing size and weight by using Loxia's de-clicking mechanism from the lens mount.

I still don't get all the hoopla over ~ $100 price difference, unless it's more about the weight.
Granted, less expensive gear is always welcome, but it's not like it puts the lens into the price range of people who didn't have the budget for the existing lenses.

I am not sure that the Loxia lenses mechanism doesn't also add weight. All of those lenses seem a bit heavier than I would have expected as well. Certainly the Loxia 35 and 50 are heavier than their ZM equivalents. Moving the aperture ring to the bottom (as would likely be required for that mechanism) I would not see as a positive change either. I like the aperture rings at the front of the lens.

True, didn't think about that. Perhaps the main reason the Loxia aperture ring is located at the bottom of the barrel.

Personally I am hopping they still make lenses in the original design. I would have really liked to see two versions of the 35mm f1.2 one in the new style, on the the classic style.

I agree about the 28mm FL. I’m waiting on a CV 28/1.2. It would gap much better with the CV 21 and CV 50s than the 35.

In Japan the official price of original E-mount 50/1.2 is 150000 yen and the new is 115000 yen, and actual current prices (including tax) e.g. at Map Camera are 127990 yen and 106200 yen so the difference is more than 100$. U.S. has had cheaper pricing on the original version so not sure how the gap will be there for this one.
Now that I checked, the original version was 129200 at Map Camera when it was first released, (I bought it on release day), so the price of the original hasn't dropped much at all in about 1 year + 2 months since launch. At original launch the included tax was 8% and now it's 10% though.

Juha, is it likely this is all that is planned for 2020, for E mount? A lot of pent up demand for a 28mm at f1.4, a fast portrait 75mm and/or an APO-Lanthar between 65mm and 110mm. At least one of these would be excellent.
We can all have our dream lenses from Cosina .. mine (currently) is a modern WATE style lens because 16-18-21 ticks so many boxes.

Cosina has been releasing 1 new lens each month this year starting from February (21/1.4 VM), then 35/1.2 VM III in March, 60/0.95 m43 coming this month and then 1 of the new SE series for each of the next 3 months. I'd guess they'll still have something new for the last 5 months of the year also in E-mount, at least 1 more. I'm thinking it would more likely be a new addition to the APO-Lanthar series in the 75-90mm range (like the 50/2 and not macro) but I'm just guessing. I don't have a lot of confidence in a new 28mm in the near term since they've not put much emphasis on that focal length for a long time now...

That’s one of my dreams. The other is a tri Elmar style 28-35-45 f4 (or 3.5 if not too huge)

I am all for cheaper knock offs of Leica originals, even if it is decades later. Cosina and us users should be very grateful to the Leica fans who support Leica to make it all possible.
I just wish Cosina would also copy Leica’s elegant built (retractable) lens hoods where applicable.

Thanks, Juha. It's like reading tea leaves. The other makers telegraph what they intend, often well in advance but they are quite predictable generally. Cosina is different and maybe we can hope they are resolutely in the small/light Leica tradition after these SE releases, which seem to have appeared out of the blue. Glad to hear there may be more.
