They've done Sony users a solid here, greatly reducing the FE weight penalty over the VM counterparts. Excellent move.

As long as the build quality wasn't compromised.

Well reduction in weight and price are always welcome. If you use these for stills only it is a very nice change and the 35 f/1.2 III looks like a really nice addition as well. Let's see if they continue to offer both these SE version and the other version for those who want to shoot video. Having both versions available would be ideal.

I,for one, found the original 40/1.2 extremely light. Barely knew it was on the camera.

These 3 lenses can now be found on Cosina's website.....

Actual pre-order prices at Map Camera (including 10% tax):
35/1.2 SE is 106200 yen: https://www.mapcamera.com/item/4530076233133
40/1.2 SE is 88020 yen: https://www.mapcamera.com/item/4530076233140
50/1.2 SE is 106200 yen: https://www.mapcamera.com/item/4530076233157

Without the 10% tax the above exchange prices are $898 USD for the 35 & 50 f1.2 SE and $749 USD for the 40 f1.2 SE. Finally, some resonable prices for Voigtlander MF lens for Sony. For me, MF lenses are fun but not something I use a lot anymore, becasue the AF is so excellent on my A73. Tried the Nokton 40mm f1.2 last year but returned it as just wasn't worth the $1,140 (including tax) Voigtlander asked for the standard Sony version. Hopefully B&H will sell for these prices and with the no tax Payboo card, the potential $391 savings on the new 40 f1.2 has got me interested.

Yeah, come to think of it, I don’t think I’ve ever wished my 40/1.2 was lighter. Perhaps because it necessitates 2-handed operation as a MF lens. Aesthetically I like the original, but a decent cost and weight savings is probably worth going for the SE if you’re buying new.

Yes, buying new it might be more cost effective to go this route. Or buy the originals at an inevitable discount!
Even better.

These prices are great, though I'd imagine it will depress used prices of the original 40 and 50. I don't ever plan on selling mine, so it's not that big of a deal, but I got mine used (in mint condition) for around $900, so if new is $150 less than that, that's a great entry point.

I always disliked the old style of focus ring, so these new ones are very welcome. I also never have liked clickless aperture, so removing that to get lighter weight is again another positive. Looking forward to the US pricing on these. Not sure I can justify more MF lenses in my kit now that I have a great AF body, but the 35mm f1.2 is very tempting.

These three SE edition lenses look very nice, even more Olympus OM like than their predecessors.

Nice weight saving and black rims and filter threads around the front element.

So thankful it's not a Silver Edition.

Very cool that Voigtlander is even offering this. We already thought Voigtlander lenses were well priced and weighted, and then they go ahead and become even cheaper and lighter.

Their E mount line up is littered with gems at more than reasonable prices...very good brand.

I really like the design and build quality of the existing versions and wouldn’t trade that for a slight weight or cost savings. Fortunately I don’t need to as I can keep my 50/1.2, 21/3.5 and 35/1.4 Classic.

I would love to add the new 35 to my collection but the new form factor is a big detractor for me. I’ll wait for reviews before deciding, but my first impression is that they’ve lost a sale to me over the physical design change.

Ergo aside (I agree, VR), it's quite a meaningful move by Cosina. With these releases they are actually prioritising stills photography for highly mobile photographers at a time when most all heavyweights (pun intended) are stampeding towards quiet video-capable lenses.

I never knew about the weight/size overheads involved in de-click apertures, but proof is in the pudding. Video implies fairly stationary work - the exact opposite of 'stills' (why not 'photography -vs- video').

Out-traditionalising the traditional brands. Original thinkers, our Cosina people.

I agree, I could easily live without the de-click. I just wish they wouldn't have changed the focus ring design. I love the current design, find it very helpful, and anyone who likes consistency is going to find this change frustrating.

I'm attracted to the lower weight of the new designs compared to the previous E-mount versions of 40/1.2 and 50/1.2 but I wouldn't sell my existing copies to replace them with the new versions, as all are excellent copies and resale value would probably be less than the new versions cost as new for now. I already got the VM 35/1.2 III too but not planning to replace that either as it works very well on my Sony A9 and my Sigma fp.

I should start a rumor site!

As far as we can tell it's a copy paste optical design in a smaller package.

Yes, even to the number of aperture blades. For example, the new CV 40/1.2 SE still has 10 blades. (instead of 12)
Will it have less onion ring bokeh compared to the CV 50/1.2? Only time will tell.

It seems that 40/1.2 and 50/1.2 are optically identical to previous E-mount versions as Cosina used the same sample photos for both versions and all specs regarding optical design seem identical. Also the DC Watch article talked about the changes and nothing was mentioned about changes in the optical side...

Of course the 35/1.2 might have some minor changes compared to VM III since it is stated to be optimized for Sony. The angle of view is slightly different for the VM and E-mount versions too according to specs.

I wonder if they will keep the exact same design for the Sony version as I don't see any FC on the VM version + Sony body.

Yes, except that the lenses get cheaper, lighter and smaller instead.

And lose the declicking feature instead of gaining it. Kind of the anti-Milvus rebranding.
