Thanks for the feedback. Damn, I was hoping they'd have this sorted out. I'd be using it on an R3 as well, did it back focus both on AF-C and AF-S?
I may roll the dice if I can get a good deal, and test it out thoroughly while I can send it back.
The issue he referenced sounds similar to the one that I found on my copy as well as Jordan Steele. I believe both of us had early copies, but not sure if there is a difference.
In short, the issue was using AF-S at the long end and stopped down (e.g. f/8) AND at a medium or long distance which resulted in the focus point being slightly off. It wasn't present using AF-S at the short end or using the lens wide open and shooting up close wasn't an issue. The best fix was to use AF-C and fire off several shots. I don't recall anyone reporting this on an A7R4 or A9 at the time, but it is also not the easiest thing to detect as it requires a group of variables.
Ideally this won't be the case with a new Sony A9III because I don't have faith that the Tamron technicians would be able to replicate this. It is definitely an annoyance to have to remember to switch to AF-C with this lens but not having to do that with others.
