p.1 #1 · Mesa Arch at Sunrise

Congratulations to Fred Miranda for winning Feature Thread of the Week with 7 votes - View Previous Winners

I finally had the change to process this image. It's a 3 exposure blend with a separate f/18 for the sunstar.
It was my first time at this location and I was surprised to be the first one to arrive. However, by the time I left was at least 100 photographers there!

Sony A7R4 + Sigma 14-24/2.8 @14mm

I hope you enjoy it.
Best,
Fred

Fred,
Another incredible shot. The sunstar is a must here, glad you left the lens flare...gives it that cosmic ray feeling.

Awesome details on that one Fred. The sunstar looks nice.
Seems like a really popular place to shoot.

Lovely starburst from your Sigma 14-24mm and great image and processing.
I am not a fan of the flare artifacts but they don't look too bad here.

We were here in -10 degrees and first, and just 1 person more came and that's it.... a rarity no matter the weather.

Nice work...especially being the first on location! Any chance you have it without the top of the arch clipped? Or was that a result of the frame?

very nice all around. I had not thought of doing an f18 for the sun rays ... good idea!

Beautiful image! It looks so serene. But the mental image of 100 photographers out there means the reality of being out there was something less than serene.

Thanks Sunny. I usually remove ghosting flare from my landscape images but this one didn't bother me either.
It was incredible being there when during sunrise and making friends with so many photographers.

It's a very popular location indeed. Perhaps a bucket list for many.
It took me a while to visit Mesa Arch but I'm glad I did.
Thanks for your comment.

Thank you!
Aside from visiting when it’s super cold, I found the best way to beat the crowds and find a good spot in this location during sunrise is to get there 2 hours before dawn. Good idea for some nightscapes as well.

Hi Jim,
My original framing does not have the arch clipped. I am not sure which one I prefer but it’s something I’ve played with.

Thanks for your feedback!

A picture with this much character makes me feel as if I were there. That is one impressive image Fred and handling of extreme lighting conditions

Jim,
After I read your post, I went back and play with the image more and prefer the version showing the entire arch. Thanks again!
