I've had a rain machine/sprinkler system for several years, and just decided to start offering rain sessions in my studio this year. I'm just going to set it up 2 or 3 times a year to give it some exclusivity. I brought in some dancers and a few of my senior ambassadors for a test shoot, thought they came out pretty good.
I built a 16x20-foot pool, if you will, so the subject will be standing in 2-3 inches of water. I had originally set the sprinkler up to be held by a couple of stands, but I don't get the full effect of 20 feet wide with those stands in there with them, so I'll be attaching the sprinklers to the ceiling for the next real shoot. I plan to add a light up on the ceiling as well.
Hope you enjoy them as much as I, and my clients, do.
9. Here's the setup. Four Einsteins. Two with big strip boxes gridded at 90 degrees to camera. Two smaller strip boxes gridded at 135 degrees. I also had three lights for continuous lighting as I shot video while doing the photography. http://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49618823831_d978d04e30_b.jpg
Hey don these are very cool!
Sorry don’t recognize any of the girls, guess I haven’t dated any of them!!! 😬 LoL
Looks like a LOT of work! Hope you line up a few shoots while you’re set up.
The hair flips look great. Woulda thought you needed more water.
I’ve got a shot planned using a clear umbrella in the daytime and turning the day into night and getting cool specular balls of light both in front and behind with shallow DoF. At least it works in my mind. You should try one!!!
Great and creative work!!!

Ron, these are impressive and enjoyable images! Plus, it is seemingly fun to do for both the photographer(s) and models - YGMV!

Thanks, Joshua! It was totally fun. The girls loved it. I was tethered to a 60-inch TV monitor so the girls could see each shot as I took, along with their moms, and it was good fun!

Hey John,
It's funny because some of my followers on IG and FB have gotten to know some of my dancers, so they get happy when I post new shots.
It was some work to build the set, but I built it to be very portable, easy to put up and take down. Did these shoots to market my rain shoots a couple times a year. I know it will go over very well.
Can't wait to see this shot you described. Sounds like it could be killer.
I've long admired your dance photography for its creativity and technical excellence. These "rain" shots however, are truly amazing. Excellent work.
Tom
Thanks so much, Tom! I've done these rain shots before, but this is the first time I added the pool of water for them to be in, and it really worked out well. It's interesting tho, because I was thinking today about how if I keep doing these rain shoots, which direction I might go with them, how much better I might get.

Dang! I was hoping you might prototype it for me!!! LoL
I’ve been planing it for about 5 years along with a custom car shot in a 1/2 inch of water, kinda like your pool but really shallow.
You should recreate that water dump shot from Flashdance. That was very cool!!!
Get a mermaid suit, girls love mermaids!!! LoL
Good luck with your water pool evolution, in sure it will go over big!!!

Thanks! I've already gotten a lot of positive feedback from other clients on this rain shoot. Can't wait to see some of your ideas! Sounds pretty cool to have the custom car in water!
Great idea - even better execution, Ron! Exciting and graphical photography at its best!! Always enjoy your work and this inspires me to seek ways to push my own work. Thanks for posting!!
