I have made 1400 pictures yesterday. had it again twice.
Once a focus lockup but also a system lockup. Nothing worked anymore. battery out and it starts working again.

I juist reboot the camera fast to continue to take pictures.
I would highly suggest sending it in to CPS. They can pull codes when that happens and figure out if it’s a bad board / chip in your camera or a bigger software issue that effects multiple cameras.

I have done around 10,000 shots with the 1dxIII, no issue with it locking up so far.
Just pretend its a Sony, and its writing to the card... joking...

....so true....
Although at least with the Sony you can keep shooting.
So here I was thinking that I had a problem free 1 DX3. Had shot ~8000 frames. Well today, while shooting birds in flight the camera froze 4 times. Pressing the shutter did nothing. Lasted about 2-4 seconds each time.
But the interesting part was that about 10 minutes before my first "freeze" my AF point disappeared. I could still activate the shutter but my AF point was gone. I tried pressing on the AF selection button and nothing. Tried scrolling through the menu and nothing. I had to turn camera off and then back on again and then AF point became visible again. Sooo ...bummed out and have sent an incident report to Canon Canada. Has anyone heard from Canon? What happened to me is exactly like this video from DP Review. https://www.dpreview.com/news/3071838969/several-canon-1d-x-mark-iii-are-reporting-issues-with-the-ovf-freezing-in-burst-mode
I just got a phone call from CPS Canada saying there will be a firmware update available on April 7, 2020 that addresses the issue of the "freeze" on the 1 DX3.
I do hope it works because the technician offered a "work around" to try in the meantime. He asked me to go to Viewfinder display (yellow wrench page 2) and hide the electronic level. Unfortunately, mine was already set on "hide" so that was not helpful for me. Might work for others with this problem while we wait for the firmware update on April 7.
Fingers crossed it will work.
We have confirmed that the following phenomenon may occur during the use of the EOS-1D X Mark III digital SLR camera. A new firmware release is planned for early April; once the new firmware is ready, we will make an announcement on our website.
We sincerely apologize to users who may have experienced inconvenience due to this issue.
Phenomenon:
When the camera is used with the electronic level set to “Show” in the viewfinder display, in rare cases, the camera may not perform normally when operating the AF-ON button or shutter button.
Affected Product:
EOS-1D X Mark III (Firmware version 1.0.0)
Workaround:
Use the “Hide” setting for the electronic level in the viewfinder display.
This VF level FW doesn't sound like it is addressing the freeze problem. Gail already reports she didn't have the level on. Did anyone else that had the freeze even have the VF level on?

The fact that you got 8,000-ish freeze-free shots before this came up makes me wonder if it's some other obscure setting combination that Canon hasn't identified yet (in addition to the electronic level).
If you have the patience, you might try resetting the camera to factory settings and then start customizing as before. I'm just basing this on my experience with troubleshooting brand new software. Very often you'll discover and/or remember something you changed just before the problem first appeared.
I also finally had it happen to one of my bodies. Turned the camera off then back on and its been back to normal since. Looking forward to the firmware update!
mtbakerskier- did you have the electronic level on? And if you are a CPS member, please send in an incident report to them.
The more we send in reports, the more likely we will get some action if this firmware update does not work!
Thanks,
gail

I have the level on in the viewfinder from the first day of operation, never had an issue so far.
Roughly 10,000 actuation's so far.

Yes, but your camera was blessed by the Canon gods so you are one of the lucky ones. Anyone who sacrifices a 1DXII by rolling it over a 100 foot cliff in appeasement to the gods is rewarded by a flawless copy of the next model....something for others to consider

That's one tough camera, I understand why the gods love it...
Sony would never survive that fall.... lol
