I was treated to a spectacular display of air superiority the other day at the wetlands in Florida, and was lucky enough to witness a Peregrine Falcon on a successful hunt. I had never seen Peregrines in these parts before, so hopefully this is a sign of more to come! I was shooting another bird altogether when something whooshed over my head, only four or five feet above me. Expecting it to be one of the fearless back vultures, or maybe another heron, I looked up, only to see something small and fast disappearing into the distance. A few shots at 500mm were nothing special, but they allowed me to confirm that a Peregrine Falcon was in these parts, and now I was ready.
Staying in the same area I was scanning the distance, hoping for this individual to come back, and maybe 15 or 20 minutes later I got my wish, and some awesome shots as well. Upon reviewing them, the Purple Gallinule looks to be already dead, or at least seriously wounded. I think that the initial strike was probably on that first fly-by. Maybe the falcon was letting the prey expire without any risk to itself, or maybe it worked its way free of the talons in its final struggle, but the falcon was not about to give up on this meal, and circled back for take out! Enjoy!
