p.1 #1 · Dancers in the Desert

Congratulations to friscoron for winning Feature Thread of the Week with 2 votes - View Previous Winners

Hi everyone! I mentioned that my wife and I were putting together the Pas de Deux Dance Photography Conference in Phoenix on Jan. 31-Feb. 2, and it came off so much better than we had even hoped. We had around 230 photographers attend the inaugural event, 60-plus dancers, and some amazing speakers.

This was a type of classroom where we do lectures, workshops, photo walks, and studio setups. In other words, you were either learning or practicing what you were learning, or building your portfolio with some amazing dancers who came from all over the country.

I didn't really have much time to photograph dancers but here are a few shots that I did get.

1. Everyone else was in a scrum below me. I climbed a rock to shoot over them, and I liked the angle better up there.

4. Pretty interesting to watch a ballerina do some rock-climbing to get to this ledge.

6.

7. We had two sunrise shoots over the weekend where we bussed the photographers and dancers into the desert. Even in Phoenix, those February sunrises can chilly but the dancers were troopers.

8. This shot is by Derrick Cleveland of me and my team, and our amazing speakers. Anyone recognize any of the speakers?

9. This is an iPhone shot in bad light. Just wanted to show what it looked like, and the resort was amazing with plenty of fountains to play in. The temps almost got to 80 on our last day, so this was fun!

10. Everywhere you turned, there was a photo shoot going on. We even had it set up so two photographers could check out two dancers and do their own photo shoots.

11. This was our first sunrise shoot. We had around 55 photographers and 20 dancers spread out on both sides of this peak. On Sunday, we had almost 100 photographers and 20 something dancers. Dancers would largely stay put in their setting, and the photographers would move around from one dancer to the next.

The concentration of dance photographers, speakers and talented dancers in one location was unbelievable.

Thanks to Ron, his family and staff for an outstanding workshop!

Great captures Ron!!! I hurt just looking at the flexability of those young women! Like the shot of the "How To's" also.

Thanks! I think it was the spirit of everyone -- the photographers, the dancers, the speakers -- it all came together so well. It was like everyone was determined to have a good time!

Thanks so much! Our first one, we really didn't know what to expect. It was really fun to see if all come together so well.

Wow, wonderful images you got there! I would love to participate in something like that as a photographer, of course. Is that an annual event typically in the winter in the desert?

Great series, Ron

For me, (1) and the silhouette stand H&S above the rest. If possible, I would have lowered my POV on the silhouette so as not to cut off her feet.

Thanks, Joshua! It is now an annual event, and we'll do it in different parts of the southern USA as it's a February event and we need a little bit of warmth. We're looking at Florida for 2021. We should be locked in by the end of March.

I forgot to say. You should follow PasdeDeuxphoto on IG, and we have a list at pasdedeuxphoto.com. Also, there is a private Facebook Group for dance photographers, or people interested in dance photography, on Facebook. Just search for PasdeDeuxPhoto in groups, and it will pop up.

Let me add my thanks to you and Beth for the vision and hard work you invested to put this together. It was great to be able to spend quality time with Rachel Neville, David Hoffman, Jordan Matter, and my first dance shooter, David Cooper. I didn’t take a single frame, yet it met all of my expectations and then some.

So glad to do it, and thanks so much for co-leading the sunrise shoot with me. That was a lot of fun. Getting to meet all those photogs was fun, and like you, I hardly took any photos. Nothing much beyond what's here.

Thanks so much! It was pretty amazing to have so much talent -- in front of the camera, and behind it -- from all over the country, and a few from all over the world.
