The sunset of February 16th in Death Valley was one to remember. A lenticular band of clouds boiled in the sky all afternoon, and I knew chances were good for a spectacular light show. I chased the band of clouds as it drifted south until I settled for these brine pools near Badwater Road somewhere south of Badwater itself. While one camera shot time lapse I danced around the ankle attacking salty mud to capture different compositions as the light show unfolded. The color in the sky lasted over 45 minutes. The last photo in this post was more than 30 minutes after the sun set in the horizon, brought to life by a 30 second exposure. It was truly one of the most spectacular sunsets I have ever seen in the park, a place where I have experienced countless cloudless sunsets.
That's a good question. The first image has become my most liked photo on instagram ever, so it seems like a likely candidate. I posted the last one there today and at some point in the next month or two will get around to the other two views. Of course, Instagram is just one outlet. I'm ever amused by how images get response in one place but not another. One audience thinks an image is awesome and on another it might as well be a photo of dirt. But anyway, I was quite pleased with this sunset and how I captured it.
Love the vivid red. I like the way the water leads me into the photo, toward the mountains and the sky above. It's wonderful to get a rare sky like that. Nice work!

Wow! What a treat. Best images I've seen from there.
Wow thank you Fred! That is some high praise!
Thank you all for your kind words. Hard work of getting to know a park the size of Connecticut pays off eventually when you can recognize conditions and know where to go to best capture them. I've been going to the park since 2008 and there's still so much more to explore there. I can't get out there enough.
