p.1 #1 · Best wireless shutter release for Z7?

Looking for a shutter release with a bit more range than the wired 10 pin trigger I have (the latter only works on my D850 anyways).

Nikon plus SMDV, Vello, etc all have a somewhat bewildering array of options. The corded options all don't work as I need more than a 3 foot range.

Thoughts? Thanks in advance!

I'd check out the vello freewave wireless RF trigger. I have one from my Canon days and I believe it also supports Nikon. SMDV also makes one, but the vello one seems better reviewed and is cheaper.

Why not just use your phone?

I'm pretty sure the Snapbridge app functions as a remote release for both the Z7 and D850

Should have clarified that snapbridge/iphone is not an option, as it's for a commercial job where people will be taking their own photos for part of the day as part of the concept

You might have a look at this one:

Vello FreeWave Plus Wireless Remote Shutter Release for Nikon

Apparently the SMDV RF-908 is also compatible with the Z7, same remote as with the 10 pin model but with a USB connector.

Thanks! I ended up ordering this Vello one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00653AKG0/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Should be here in a couple days, so will report back on my findings. Interesting that Nikon decided to forego an infrared sensor on the Z7, as apparently the simple nikon infrared remote does not work. Personally would have been fine with infrared, but I suppose an RF trigger is even better. Cool thing is if I wanted to, I can trigger multiple cameras with the Vello. I can do this now with pocket wizards, but you can get one of these vellos for about a quarter of the price of a PW

Nikon's replaced the IR remote with the ML-L7 BT remote, which lets them drop extra hardware (as the BT hardware is already present)

Are you sure it works with the Z7/Z6 though? It shows as being compatible with the Z50 on the website, but doesn't mention support for the Z6/Z7. https://www.nikonusa.com/en/nikon-products/photography-accessories/mirrorless-camera-accessories.page#!/tag:7WA:Remotes%20and%20Releases/product:1591:Z%207

I suppose nice thing about the vello one is I can use it with both the Z7 and D850, whereas the BT remote would probably only work with the Z7?

Hm, well digging into this a bit more, it appears that others have tried to pair their ML-L7 to a Z6, and it wouldn't work. This was as of 4 months ago, so this may have changed, but Nikon service is also saying that mentions of it working with the Z6/Z7 are erroneous

I use the Promaster multi-function rf timer remote #4964 on the Z6 with great success.

Nice! I like the looks of that one. Appears the trigger uses AAAs, what does the receiver use battery-wise?

The Vello worked out great, but don’t love that it uses somewhat less common CR2 and those flat watch batteries

It uses a CR2 battery in the receiver. If the batteries go dead in either unit I can always run a cable from the transmitter straight to the camera to trigger a shot. When not in use I always remove the batteries and always carry a spare set just in case.

oh that's really nice that it works both as a wired and wireless trigger. Thanks for the info.

For 200 bucks it better make coffee, vacuum and empty the garbage.

Thanks, yeah that's the one I got. Works great out of the box. Was expecting to do more setup, but it started working as soon as I plugged it into the port.

I like the looks of the promaster one too, particularly the wired backup option and that the trigger accepts standard AAAs. Seems like a worthwhile investment if I need to do this more often.

If you need a wireless intervalometer Pixel Pro has this one with adapter wires for both Nikon remote types.
