I think it is finest piece and same quality of Otus in sharpness (best 28mm MTF so far).
The sharpest 28m AF lens ever used in among many top class 28mm lenses and similar sharpness to Nikon 28mm F1.4 E and Leica 28mm Elmarit-R F2.8 V2 E55, and VM 28mm F2 V2 that I used.

I know all this, but the SIZE!! (still gonna get it). I just bought the new VM 28mm as well. the size difference is humorous 28 was my bread and butter for a long time and I'm getting back into it... Really wish Sony had a good one...

Damnit i already gas'd on the 70-200 2.8 gm ii. This is kinda tempting lol. The price is good but I know sigma is going to announce new primes after the 20mm f2 contemporary lens anytime soon now hopefully by first quarter of the year.

zalmyb mentioned its weight. I actually sold out it due to the weight.
Frankly, the sharpness Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN at 28mm is almost same between them.
Check https://sonyalpha.blog. I do not see any difference between them from F4-F5.6.
At F8, Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 is sharper than Sigma 28m F1.4 FE.
I wish Sony make 28mm F1.8G like 20mm F1.8G (outstanding), or Sigma make 28mm F2 DG DN in future.

I keep being tempted by this Sigma 28 Art but am put off by the size and weight on the tiny Sony bodies (a7R4). For now, I will keep using my adapted Zeiss ZE 28 f2 and hope for Sigma to come out with a new 28 in between the size and weight of the Zeiss ZE and Zeiss Loxia 25 for better balance. Maybe something in between the Art and the I-series. Obviously, I am most interested in the optical output, regardless of AF or MF (and reasonable price!). $799 certainly hits the sweet spot though, and no one is criticizing the IQ of the Sigma 28!

I'm in a similar boat. I love 28mm, and I love my Pentax 28mm. This lens surely may be superior, but I don't need the speed. And given the speed of this lens, and the fact that it is a DSLR design....it's big and heavy (relative to what I need.) I already have 3 great lenses that cover 24mm.
So no matter how tempting it is based on price. I'm doubling down on waiting for someone....hopefully CV, Sony and Sigma (with a mirrorless ground up designed 28mm) coming up with option closer to what I want.
I know some like the Sony 28mm as well....but I keep telling myself to wait.

Sony 28mm G/GM gang or bust here! Honestly would be happier with either due to the (presumably) more portable nature of the G series vs the greater speed of the GM. Still though, heard too many bad reports of the i-series tracking kids/pets to be suuuuper comfortable picking one up for a general use, fast indoor prime. Eyeing the 65/90i for a portrait/outdoor lens, but my AF demands would be a bit relaxed for that use case.
After looking at various 24/28/35mm galleries, I think 28mm is a good sweet spot that is more to my tastes than either 24 or 35. 24 gives more potential for drama, but distorts faces more and you still have some danger of perspective warping at the edges. As a 40mm shooter, 35 seems to be in a sort of uncanny valley of being not quite the "normal" of 40mm while not dramatic at all like wider FLs. 28mm seems to give a taste of the wide angle drama without giving enough rope to easily hang yourself with. I might actually prefer 31mm (biiiiit more reach for outdoors) here, but everyone is afraid of becoming even a little bit Pentax it seems. If Sony comes out with a 31mm G/GM, I'll eat a whole chocolate bar.

Just FYI - the Sigma 65/s is an outlier in terms of Sigma AF performance. It tracks my dogs running this way and that with about 80% of the accuracy and 100% of the speed of the Sony 85/1.8. Pretty good and the images are stellar.
I just got the Sigma 90/2.8 but haven't had the time or weather to dog certify it.
Sigma lenses that failed my dog AF challenges include the 85/1.4 DG DN (did not keep), the 45/2.8 DG DN (which I kept for its lovely rendering and tiny size), the 35/2 DG DN (gone), and the 24/2 DG DN (gone). The AF failures were the only cons the Sigma lenses had. It's such a nice series of lenses and just the right ratio of size and performance. If they ever fix the AF behavior, I'll own them all.

Don't lose sleep over the Sony 28/2 -- I have it, and it is "okay". Not bad, but not really in the good range. Best thing going for it is AF, if that was what you need. The lens has inherent "fish-eye" distortion that is corrected by the camera -- not a big fan of that loss of IQ from straightening out the image curves.
My Loxia 25/2.4 and ZE 25/2 are both nearly 26mm lenses, almost able to substitute for 28mm, but not quite. As I've said many times, I'd prefer to have something like a 28-30mm lens in that gap. A great 28 would be wonderful to own, so I hold on to hope.

Thanks, that was my general impression with the Sony 28/2. And given the fondness of my Pentax over the years....I'm not chasing a push (for AF.) It would be nice to have EXIF though....don't need AF.
So like my perfect option would be something like a CV 28 APO or maybe a Sigma I Series.
Sounds like you have similar solutions for 28 with your existing 25's....so we both can be patient.

I use the Sony 28 and am quite happy with it's results. I don't use it for landscapes, but it works great for documentary photography. It's combination of weight, size and AF make it a very unique lens. I sure don't want a heavy ( >500gm ) lens to replace it.
p.2 #18 · Sigma 28mm f/1.4 DG HSM ART Lens for Sony E-mount only $799!
This is an incredibly good performing lens for $799, with sharpness across the field, save for a little astigmatism. I do not like sleeping on the sofa, however. Thank heavens it is not a DG DN version.
p.2 #20 · Sigma 28mm f/1.4 DG HSM ART Lens for Sony E-mount only $799!
The Sigma 28/1.4 Art at $799 is a super tempting offer! But I'll hold for a smaller lens that can achieve similar results. I don't expect to find a "small" lens of that sort, but certainly smaller than a mid -size zoom lens.
Until then it is the Zeiss ZE 28 or Zeiss Loxia 25 for me!
