Dave I had days like that, and based on the look of the parking lot I would change my plans.
I also had days when the wind, sometimes gentle and sometimes not, would erase the footprints as I watched.
Having time of more than a few days helped, as did extreme weather.

These are beautiful images, especially #2 and #4.
The Mesquite Dunes have always been mobbed when I have been there. People and their foot prints everywhere within minutes of sunrise. You seem to have been lucky to be there just after a clearing wind and before the mob arrived, although #5 appears to have some foot prints.
Thank you all, it was a hot afternoon around 120 degrees for photo #1, and I was walking up and down the dunes, looking for compositions with sun behind me. Going to the same spot is never the same, the dunes can look the same and there aren't reference points, or they are hidden by the rollings dunes.

I am really enjoying the X pattern in #1.
Sandstorms never damaged my windshield, but the winds can carry gravel and cause damage.
A kangaroo rat one time managed to trap himself inside my 1 gallon water bottle which was accidentally left open... and he treaded water all night and couldn't even move to run away when I freed him. The water level was low but high enough to make him almost drown. I left him in the shade afterwards and never saw him again (nor his remains). His cousins eded up eating my fabric lining above the engine when I camped there again in his neighborhood 2 years later.

Beautiful photos of the dunes in DV. The sandstorm erased any footprints, so the dunes are perfect. On my last visit there, my windshield got damaged by a sandstorm as we were leaving. It had to be replaced. Next time I'm flying and renting a car.

Rodents eating the lining of an engine compartment was not something I would have anticipated as a risk to one's car in DV. That must have been a real surprise, and not such a welcome one!
