Really impressive capture of a battle. I just photographer my first hooded merganser a few weeks ago. Very cool bird.

Mike, thank you very much for your kind words. I saw images of them swallowing small crayfish before but never in my mind, I could not imagine that this male merganser could subdue and then swallow a crayfish this big. A lady that was there shortly before I came to the location told me that a female merganser caught a big crayfish but it was too big and the female had to let it go. There is no way of knowing for sure but I got a hunch that this was the same crayfish that ended up being swallowed by this male.
