p.1 #1 · Sony 24-105 and a wide prime for Landscape work?

Question for my landscape photographer brethren shooting Sony. I'm re-evaluating my landscape lens choices and I'd love some feedback.

For years I shot a 24 TS-E on 5DII then adapted to an A7R. It was complimented by C/Y 35-70. This was my kit for long hikes/backpack trips. I've since swapped out the 24 TS-E with a Sony 16-35 F4 and upgraded to the RII. I live in the desert and tend to shoot in conditions that do not favor lots of lens changes and in that regard, I've been really happy with the 16-35, very versatile, the autofocus is welcome when the conditions are changing fast. I had an accident with my 35-70 and have been considering what will replace it before just repeating myself with the C/Y.

But as happy as I am with the 16-35, I've been considering ditching it for the 24-105, and maybe supplementing it on the wide end like a Batis 18. This combo seems really versatile for hiking/backpacking. I've thought about the Tampon 17-28 and 28-70 but honestly I think I'll be changing lenses more than I'd like. Any thoughts?

I have been very happy with my Sony 24-105 G and a Voigtlander 15mm prime. Both superb lenses. This setup is perfect for when I am shooting landscapes or other subject when I am on a tripod.

However, often when I need wide FLs I am shooting dimly lit interiors or other situations. So, I have recently added the Tamron 17-28 f/2.8 for when I want faster glass at the wide end for hand holding.

I have the Batis 18, 24 1.4GM and the 24-105 F4. All are great and I have been most surprised by how good the 24-105 is for a zoom. If you don't need anything longer than 35, I think you should stay with the 16-35. I would not get any of the Tamron zooms over the 24-105 even if they are faster lens since I think they are optically inferior.

I used the Batis 18 and 24-105 as a travel combo. They both share 77mm filters. I usually added an x100 or a fast prime.

I swapped out the Batis for a Tamron 17-28 and am happy with that choice.

I think I see a pattern developing here. The one lens that forms the backbone of everyone's setup is the 24- 105. It is such an excellent lens.

I am also possibly considering adding the 24-105 to work with my 16-35 gm but the sigma 24-70 2.8 is very tempting as well. Around same price. Never had a 24-70 or a 24-105. Always shot with an ultra wide zoom and primes from 20-85mm for landscapes...but i always shot mostly either ar 25mm or between 14-24 with the sigma 14-24 on my DSLR days.

24-105 + something fast in the 14-18mm range is a great setup. Just splurge on the 16-35 GM!

Your 16-35 and a 24-105 is actually just about the perfect kit for landscape. I've been watching a lot of YT from top landscape photographers recently and way more than the odd one use the 24-105 (from whatever manufacturer) we are talking Landscape Photographers of the Year quality here. I had no idea it was so widely used though I can understand why since even hiking in Nepal I know I could have got away with 100mm as my longest lens.

I know we all have our favourite primes (mine being Loxia 21mm & Voigtlander UC 35mm) but that may be for other reasons (sunstars or using the fast lenses for low DoF when shooting other genres perhaps) but nothing wrong with just those two lenses.

I've had my A7III and 24-105 f4 now for over a year and a half. And it's my only lens I've used in that time, minus rentals here and there over that time period. It hasn't failed me yet in the Grand Canyon, Sedona or just around the area. Yes, a longer lens is in the future for wildlife. And maybe a wider faster lens for say Meteor Crater or Horseshoe Bend or a just in case I need a wide lens in a certain area. But the 24-105 is a great all around lens.

Depends on what you find yourself using more. If you're having a lot of success with the 16-35/4 you could keep it and supplement it with a longer prime, something like the CV50/2 or the FE85.

If you feel you need the broader range of the 24-105/4, I pair mine with the Loxia 21, but the Batis 18 or CV15 would probably be really good choices too.

Or just stick with the 24-105 only and save yourself some pack weight. It's enough for 90% of landscape shots in my experience.

If you dont want to lens swap, the key thing is what are the most widely use focal lengths for your style of landscape shooting. and it also could depend on what you are shooting on a given day. I personally would not give up the versatility of an ultrawide zoom
A couple of years ago, I travelled through southwest, going to zion, bryce, page horse shoe bend, antelope canyon, monument valey, grand canyon, and sedona. It was my first experimentation with sony. took a7r and my 3 canon zooms with adapter, 70-300L, 24-70 2.8II, and 16-35 f4L. there were days and locations that I almost exclusively shot with 16-35 (upper and lower antelope canyon) and days that I excelusively shot with 24-70 (monument valley, grand canyon). I would just do the 16-35, 24-105 and be done with it.

Try going out with just the 24-105 and when you need a wider shot, stitch multiple shots for a wider FOV with it set at 24mm. I do this quite often if I don't feel like swapping lenses for just a single shot. It also might be worth having something a bit wider than 18mm for a wide prime, as it is super easy to get the same FOV of a scene using multiple 24mm shots. I think a 14-15mm prime would be better, especially if also good for any astro-landscape work if you're so inclined.

p.1 #15 · Sony 24-105 and a wide prime for Landscape work?

Having just moved back to Sony with the A7R2 I have been undergoing the usual system change lens acquisition process. However, I still have some Leica lenses and also the requisite adapters. These include the Leica R 21-35/3.5-4 and the Leica M 21/3.4. I now wonder if I would be better served by a single e-mount prime at the wide end for landscape use as my recently acquired 24-105 seems quite exceptional and covers most of the range of the 21-35.

My debate is whether or not to sell either or both of these in favour of a Voigtlander 21/1.4 or Loxia 21/2.8 (or even possibly the 24/1.4GM). Any thoughts would be gratefully received.

@waterden - I`m very new to landscape photography, but I`m sure the the Loxia or the Voigtländer is in that case the better choice (over the 24GM) Think of sun stars - there are lot nicer with the Loxia or the Voigtländer. (I have had all this lenses) and MF is in that case also an advantage..

My set up at the moment is:
21/1.4 Voigtländer, the 24-105 G and sometimes the 100-400 GM

I have also the 16-35 GM, but I use it very seldom for landscape - I have bought it for Real Estate

I totally agree...if you don't mind zooms for your landscape photography, these two zooms cover majority of the focal lengths and deliver fine images especially stopped down to typical landscape apertures.

Stopped down at typical landscape apertures, how does the IQ of the 24-105 stand up to some of the best primes? Lenses like these:

Sony 24/1.4 GM
Loxia 25/2.4
CV 40/1.2
CV 65/2 APO
Loxia 85/2.4
CV 110/2.5

If the Sony 24-105 effectively holds its own at f/8 to f/14, it would replace a bag of lenses for landscape photography. Has anyone done a comparison of the the 24-105 versus the best primes in the same focal length range at landscape apertures?

Fred did a comparison of the 24-105 vs a bunch of primes when the 24-105 was first launched. The 24-105 holds its own, although not quite as good as the primes. If you look at the landscape shots from Ronny Olson and Joshua shot with the 24-105, there is not much to complain about, except the sunstar, if that's your thing.

Happy shooting!

Depends on what you want to do with the images. Print large or just display on your computer or the net.
