Yes, the older gentleman I borrowed it from asked me to do it as he had never done a lens FW update before. Pius did his own FW update before giving me the lens.
If I hadn't updated the FW on the guys' lens I'm pretty sure it would be into CPS getting a new IS unit by end of day. The thing was clunking every 5 mins panning BIF.
Yes, it was really bad when I used my 400DOII on the EOS-R, so much so that I immediately returned the EOS-R and starting selling off my Canon gear.
A good thing that Canon issued this new firmware to make it possible to shoot the 400DOII on the R5

I don't recall jumpy IS with the 400DO II on the R5 but I did the FW update anyway to be safe. The lens was definitely on 1.0.8 before the upgrade to 1.0.9.

I dont believe all samples were (are) affected, when I opened my support case beginning of this year with the EOS-R, they tried with three different copies and found no issues (allegedly), yet mine jumped around continuously.

I did not have any jumpy IS before or after the update of the 400mm DO II with the EOS R I have had the R for over two years so maybe that helped understanding what settings worked best for me. Mostly small birds in their habitat and very few BIF.
