Here are a few N. Harrier shots from my visit to Boundary Bay last week.
I also included a couple cameos from a little feisty owl

wow wow and wow.
love how the SEO went after the harrier.
somehow the bokeh of the 500mm is more appealing than the bokeh of the 200-600. voted of course.

Super set Geoff. I see you’re still playing with the d500.

All great shots, Geoff... but the first one is off the charts.

These are all excellent but the first two are superb, and the close-up in #3 is amazing. I assume #3 is not a crop and she got close.

Arash,

Is one if these a male? If so which one. They all look like females to me (i.e. they are brown not gray) but I am no expert. I have never photographed a male and believe they are all females. I suspect that I may be wrong.

You got the light on these. All well done, Geoff. I like the harrier chasing the shorty (I know it looks the other way around) in 5. Now 6 is obvious.

These are all male birds Dave, males have white/grey undersides. only #6 is a female

Yes, what Arash said is correct. They are all males (except #6) but not in full perfect solid grey plumage. Boundary Bay is a good spot for males (Grey Ghosts) and the last couple years all my shots have been of perfect plumaged males. For whatever reason the males I saw on my two trips this year were in this intermediate(?) plumage. Not sure if this is a transitional plumage from juvenile plumage (which is more like a female plumage), a winter plumage (I don't think so) or just a more faded variation of male plumage.

All the shots except for #6 (female) and #7 (different male) were of the same bird that hung around the same area the entire day.

These are younger male birds with plumage transitioning between juvi and adult.

Thanks KD. Yes in these particular shots it certainly is better bokeh in the 500PF shots. That may be a lens thing or may just be the distance to background wasn't as favourable in the A9 shots. Although I think the prime lens 500PF without any TC involved is probably nicer rendering than the zoom lens with a TC on it.
