p.1 #1 · Love my a7r iv, but the max shutter speed...

I wonder why Sony didn't implement a higher maximum shutter speed in the a7r iv when they made the changes from the a7r iii.

My Q2 will go to 1/40,000 with the electronic shutter. I've never seen shutter speeds quite that high but I just got back from a trip to Grand Cayman and could easily take shots wide open at 1.7 with the Q2 out on the water in full mid day sunlight and on the beach without a ND filter. No such luck with the a7r iv and my 50 1.4 ZA. Being that I constantly move from indoors to outdoors and from bright sun to shade, it would be great not to have to keep fiddling with ND filters or stop down to keep the shutter speed under 1/8000 (or have to bump up the ISO because the ND is still on when I want to grab a more spontaneous shot). I use my a7r iv for both serious photography and a travel/casual camera - it would be nice to have a little more flexibility.

It already is a flexible camera being a system camera with an interchangeable lens mount unlike your Q2 which is a point and shooter.

There likely isn't any technical reason for Sony to leave out higher shutter speeds for their electronic shutters - the Panasonic S1R can go to 1/32,000 on its FF sensor. Sony also allows 1/32,000 on their 1" bodies like the RX10 IV.

What types of image would require 1/40,000th of a second shutter speed and not already involve a strobe with that sort of short duration? I am not suggesting the need doesn't exist, I just don't know what it is and I am a curious type.

I have no idea - and google didn't help me. I did find this article about a 10 nanosecond exposure technique, though - https://fstoppers.com/education/shutter-speed-1100000000-s-capturing-photos-atomic-bomb-129080

Probably because 99% of the photographers neither need nor want it.

I am waiting for my Sony A7rIV. Only have GFX50s with 1/4000 and 1/125 max sync speed. Shoot with f2 and even sometimes with my f1.2L on it. Never seen any problems. Maybe OP can explain kind of shots that require such higher ss.

Fast lenses and bright days require some fast speeds.

I've hit 1/16000, maybe 1/20000 with my Fuji setup in electronic shutter mode on some shots (i'm not claiming they're prize-winners, but it does happen occasionally).

The frustration from the OP is common -- It's a 'software thing' and why wouldn't Sony implement it? (since it's 'free').

This is a common practice to withhold or charge for extra features for many brands and other industries as well(video games in particular).

I'm a software developer -- software design, testing, etc. isn't 'free' -- hard to grasp sometimes unless one has been involved with software development and implementation into 'live' systems (which cameras in the hands of users are).

As a photographer, it frustrates me also, because some things are simple to implement in software (coding-wise).
It's the follow-up, though (regression testing, roll-out) that's a real bitch and comes with lots of pitfalls, so from THAT perspective, I can see why Sony hasn't done it (and as mentioned -- it's not really a high-priority request to begin with).

I agree that it's not a high priority request, but the A9ii shutter will go to 1/32,000. Sony has tested it on that platform.

it's usually in situations where Im shooting wide open in bright sunlight in areas with no trees or shade - beaches, on the open water, etc. I will often get the flashing "1/8000" in the EVF.

Not sure if I'm missing something. But the original A9 and R3 have done 1/32000th since their respective releases.

My Fujis have also been capable of doing is since the X-T1.

I will say though, that I have noticed that the Fujis routinely go up to 1/16000th-1/32000th with my fast primes pretty regularly but not so much with the Sony setups over the years.

Yes but shooting people at the beach at the middle of the day at f1.4? Personally I don't shoot when light is quite bad. And I let the bg blow out. Even when shooting earlier, I haven't seen that much need for higher ss. Here is an example, early evening, using only 1/125 @f2. I could have gone HSS but was teaching a class and didn't want to go HSS.

This is ISO100. I could have gone to ISO50.

Fair enough. Then they either A) use it as a segmenting feature, B) don't want to run testing through another platform, or C) both

I'm not always just shooting people as subjects. Here is an example that was taken with the Q2 at ISO 100, 1/12,000, f/1.7. I processed the image in a way that blew out some of the highlights on top of the rope (which may mean I may have been able to use 1/8000 anyway). They were exposed properly in the original image.

This was an extreme condition, though, and not a common thing to encounter. When shooting people, I will also let the background blow out. In this case I wanted the bg information for context.

I hit > 1/8000 on Fuji regularly. Daylight, wide open, no ND filter. Skiing, snowshoeing. Or in a steel mill or a particle collider.

I wish my A7RIV could do the same, I’ve needed it at f1.2

I was always hitting the max 1/2000 at f2 on the RX1 so pretty easy to hit 1/8000 with faster glass.

To all those above dumping on this ask, I never shoot long exposures and sadly would probably myopically poo poo complaints if Sony limited exposure times to, say, 5s.

It does seem odd to not have it. I’d definitely appreciate it for use with my Mitakon 50mm 0.95

I hope this isn't a rude thing to say (I'm a lady also) but - I really had a hard time looking at this shot and focusing my thoughts on shutter speed. That has got to be a pair of the nicest gams around - all due respect to the photo subject. You did her justice with this shot.

$25 on Amazon for the 82. Got one for the Sig 35 1.2

https://www.amazon.com/Adapter-Stepping-Compatible-Olympus-Available/dp/B07WD7T8XB/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

Agree though I miss the 1/32000 from X100F and A9.
