Well then I have a lens for you. It has a nasty scratch on the body...but glass is clean. I'm guessing you'd give me full value for this lens as if the scratch was not there....since you obviously have no OCD and know that deep scratch has no affect on image quality. I also have a camera that has a bunch of brassing...again no affect on the usage of that camera...priced as mint right?
Like it or not...the visual impact of gear has a huge impact on its perceived value.
Nobody but you is talking about scratches here. But yes, I'll play along: cosmetic damage to the lens barrel has an effect on a lens' perceived value. I can tell you, having sold thousands of camera lenses on eBay, that a major scratch on the body of a lens or brassing on a camera body will reduce the price the item sells for, perhaps significantly depending on the severity of the wear.
Minor internal dust though? It will still sell for market value. For such a lens, the hit you'll take from reselling will be due to the fact that it is used and (assuming you've had it for a while) out of warranty. Unless you plan on selling the lens 2 days after you purchase it, it's a moot point. It's an extremely safe assumption that whatever levels of dust the lens has from the factory, the level of dust will be higher after a year or so of normal use.
Again, as has been mentioned a few times, if we're talking about significant internal debris, rather than a few specks of dust, that will affect market value too, and may reasonably be grounds for returning the lens. We don't know if the OP has a single tiny, insignificant mote of dust, or half a cockroach in the lens, so it's difficult to speculate any further. However, it's a relatively safe assumption that with a brand new lens, it is minor, normal levels of dust one would expect to find in any lens. I'll stick with this assumption until proven otherwise. Please feel free to continue exaggerating and making up fictitious scenarios though. If nothing else it is amusing.

Well received my replacement 135mm GM and it is ten times worse than my first copy. There must be 15-20 specks of dust inside. Not only does it have much more dust than my first copy the focusing is off or at least not as sharp as my first. So my options are return both or keep the first copy which is tact sharp and only has three specks of dust inside. From reading different opinions here I will just probably keep my first copy and tell my OCD to shut up.

I'd expect ( demand? ) better from Sony's top of the line lenses. I took another detailed look with a flashlight of my Zeiss ze lenses and they have no dust at all. This is after using these lenses extensively.

I found the same with my Zeiss Batis lenses too. These puffy guys seem to prove their dust/weather resistant rating very well standing the test of both time and usage...so far.

Pretty bad when my 24-105 that I have used since its release and being a zoom lens is completely dust free yet two brand new GM 135mm lenses both have internal dust right out of the box. Call me silly but for 2000.00 lens I expect better too.

Ugh sorry to hear. Can't say we didn't tell you so though I agree, seems like keeping the first copy is the wisest course.

I just got a new 135 1.8 GM and it too has a particle inside, it looks like hair/it could be a small scratch I am not 100% sure. The retailer said I purchased the last brand new in stock and they are discontinuing the product. I got it for cheap so I didn't want a refund, I contacted Sony and was told they can fix the problem under warranty.

Perhaps this problem could be more widespread?
The dealer is discontinuing the 135mm or Sony? Curious if on your box it has a 10-19 manufacture date? Just wonder if they are from the same batch.

I am sending back both 135 GMs. Doesn't really matter if the dust will effect the image. Its the point that a top of the line Sony lens would come from the factory with dust inside. For my 2000.00 I demand better. Since they are both from the same batch I will wait a couple months and try again.

If your store told you the 135 1.8 is being discontinued in order to get you to keep your copy....I would get not only another lens, but another store.

Wait, they told you that Sony is discontinuing the GM 135 1.8?

They probably said that store has discontinued this lens. If they had unusually high number of returns, I can sympathize with that.
