p.1 #1 · Dust inside my new 135mm GM. Should I even worry about it?
Received my new 135mm GM. What an awesome lens! However I can see a speck or two of some dust inside the lens. I doubt it would show up in images but being its a new 2,000.00 lens should I worry about it and swap it out? My only concern is the replacement might have the same or worse. Thanks

I would return it for a full refund and consider buying from another source, just to avoid the same pool. (PS: note the serial number for your own reference.)
In this day and age and sophisticated facilities, dust and crap smeared inside a lens (200-600 zoom examples were posted) is simply unacceptable.

I think you guys are correct. A. The dust should not be there period. B. It may hurt resale if I ever decided to sell it. There are three or four specks of dust. The reason I asked was with this size of glass I did not know if it was considered the norm.

It's not easy to keep these lenses dust free. I long long time ago I bought a Fujifilm lens that was absolutely flawless brand new, it took only one week to get a pretty visible piece of lint inside
I don't know whether it's normal to get dust into the GM135, if it has internal focusing & sealing it should indeed be a concern.

Someone posted this on the link you provided. "As to the dust, we've found the biggest variable correlating with 'dust in my lens' is mostly about magnifying glass elements and wide apertures that make the dust apparent. It's funny how little correlation there is with 'lots' or 'little' dust looking into the lens compared to what's inside the lens. Wide aperture 85mm and 105mm lenses make dust very obviously looking through it. So I'm not certain if this lens gets more dust inside actually, or just that the dust inside is very visible. (If you don't see dust in your lens, you just don't have enough light or the aperture is pretty narrow. Every lens, every single one, straight from the manufacturer has dust inside."
So maybe it is norm? Regardless I called where I bought it (Crutchfield) and they are sending me a new replacement in advance at no charge and before having to send my copy back. They are sending it one day shipping. Can't ask for better customer service than that. They are sending me also a prepaid shipping label and I have 14 days to return my old copy. That way I can try out the new copy for any flaws and inspect it.

I hope you're happy with your new one. That sounds like great customer service.
However, your new one will probably have "a speck or two" of dust when you take it out of the box, and as others have noted, it will have more in short order.
It really makes no difference in pictures, but you have the right to be happy about a $2,000 investment.

Thanks. Then I will just keep the one with the less dust. lol. I am curious though how a closed and sealed prime lens gets dust inside after some time of using it.

Glad to see you getting a replacement. I wouldn't be happier either if i just spent 2k. I remember few weeks ago i bought a used 85 1.4 gm and later noticed it had 2 pretty bad scratches in middle of the optics that i didnt see initiallly. Ended up returning it.

I too have large specks of dust in my 135 GM, but they don’t impact IQ whatsoever.
I think it’s very strange that so many of these 135 GMs have so much dust. This is probably the 10th post I’ve seen about it, compared to probably zero for every other lens.
I get it, all lenses have some dust inside, but the 135 GM has some pretty chunky pieces.

Just did a quick check of my 135L and Zeiss 100 ze and no visible dust. Both of these lenses have been used extensively. Wonder if latest lenses QC during manufacturing is slipping.

Your lenses are probably not made in China.

That’s pretty remarkable. I’ve never seen a lens with no visible dust when a flash light is shone inside.

I might not be as anal as others when looking, but shining a flashlight into the lens I don't see any dust. I looked from both ends...nothing. These were lenses I've used for the past 10+ years.
That said, when I purchase a used lens, I don't look for dust, but rather oil on the blades and scratches on the glass. However there are many out there that would inspect every inch including the insides for dust and want a refund or some money back if they found dust specks.

A few years ago I had a guy who had an actual dust speck threshold: 5 pieces! My lens had more than 5 specs of dust, so he wasn't interested. OK then...
The only time I worry about dust is when it makes a layer that blocks light. I have lenses with what I can only describe as "chunks" (way too big for dust). They're simply not a problem.
I'm with you when it comes to oil on the blades. That means there's oil moving around inside, and it's probably volatizing and coating the glass too.
