p.1 #1 · Official Nikon 24mm f1.8S thread

I don't think there has been an official Nikon 24 f1.8S thread so, here goes.

Just picked mine up today but the weather has been awful, blowing wind and overcast, but I did manage a few shots. I didn't think I would be able to garner much from these but I can tell you, even though it is early on in my "testing", this lens is *WOW*. When I used my 24-70 f2.8S at 24mm or whatever, it was wow as well, I thought how could a 24mm prime be that much better? Well, it is! The images pop from the 24-70 f2.8S, but they pop even more with this lens. This *IS* just like the 50 f1.8S, the micro contrast is there in spades, it is sooo sharp and from edge to edge, stupid sharp wide open and with excellent bokeh for a very wide angle prime. Without the need to do back to back tests, I just know when looking at the RAW files that they are better. I hope to get some better shots in the coming days as long as I can get some decent weather and subject matter.

Boring images, but it's all I got in the short time frame and horrid weather.

Lance,
You’re like the house of Nikon lenses. Lol
Thanks for the sample images. I was a little disappointed that this lens wasn’t talked about much. And the very few who did, didn’t think it was as wow as Ricci Talk stated. I’m waiting for someone to pick up my 24mm F mount before I pick this up. It’s also the gray period here. Trees are naked and there’s no snow so just gray.

. Yeah, I've sold off all my F mounts under 70mm and replaced them with Z mounts. I have sold: 16-35 f4 VR, 24-70 f2.8E VR, 24 f1.4G, 20 f1.8G, Tamron 15-30 f2.8 VC. I now only have : 70-200 f2.8E VR, 80-400 f4.5-5.6G VR, 105 f1.4E, 400 f2.8E FL VR, 500 f5.6 PF VR and 105 f2.8 Micro.

For those that have comment on the 24 f1.8S, and I mean a particular poster over on DPR comparing it to his 14-30 f4S, I think his "testing" procedure was poor at best. Firstly, he needed to know how the 24 f1.8S field of focus works, it is quite a flat field and thus needs to be focused closer to the front of the image if you want a sharp foreground, the DOF takes care of the distance. When focused correctly, this lens is capable of outstanding results. Resolution is one thing, but when looking at actual images it has a little more impact or 'pop' compared to the unbelievably fantastic 24-70 f2.8S. Subtle, but it is there. Is it enough for anyone to buy it over the 24-70 f2.8S? For most, probably not, but for those that want the best and for creative purposes of f1.8, then it is a definite advantage. The bokeh is actually amazing given it is a wide angle.

Lance,

Congratulations. Very crisp. Nice bokeh too. Look forward to see more shots from this lens. BTW, I can't believe you sold your 24/1.4G !!

Thank you very much, Luka. Much appreciated!😊
It was a difficult decision to sell the 24 f1.4G, but the size and weight were against it and the 24 f1.8S is sharper wide open and bokeh at least as good. I am transitioning to Z mount where the lenses are at least as good and so far, they are better.

This is the key as most photographers never spend enough time to fully understand their lenses and how they work, their sweet spots and ranges

Like the 85 1.8s / 105 1.4e comparison, it would be interesting to see how this one compares to the 28 1.4e. Or should the 35 1.8s be the one that compares to the 28 ? 🤔

Interesting proposition. The 28 f1.8E is an amazing lens as is the 35 f1.8S and now the 24 f1.8S. Looking at their respective MTF's, they are all similar wide open, ie amazing. It would come down to rendering and bokeh etc. I have never shot the 28 f1.4E, but I have seen some stunning images by Charles K and others to know how good it is so, noth the 35 f1.8S and the 24 f1.8S would have a tall order to beat it. Having said that, the 24 f1.8S is a stunning lens also so a comparo would be interesting to say the least. It would need to be carried out using the same methods and post process as well so as to have a "levelish" playing field.

Some from today. Just a variety of shots of various subject matter to hopefully give an indication of the ability of this lens. Having looked at the RAW files closely, it really has amazing resolution, micro contrast and great clarity. I think it is a very impressive lens.

These are taken in the area around the Sydney Maritime Museum at Cockle Bay and Darling Harbor west of Sydney City proper.

Amazing samples. Seems to be a fantastic lens. ( still I will personally wait for the 20mm 1.8s, just because of the astrophotography matters, but for an all around wide-angle, this is extremely useful - and one can crop it anyway, even more so with the Z7)
Thanks a lot for uploading!

Wonderful shots. Great choice of scenes to evaluate this lens. Images are crisp with quite a bit of detail. It makes me wonder it is probably outresolving the Z7’s sensor. It also reminds me of the character of 24-70/2.8S shots you have posted previously. The feeling of ‘as if being there’ is strong. Very transparent, it seems.
