I just got brand new 200-600mm delivered and took a quick look inside the lens. After seeing a few dust particles inside, I decided to shine some light inside. I'm glad I did, as I discovered some smudges on one of the lens elements inside the lens. This is the first element on the "moving/zooming" part of the lens. Most likely it is due to the cleaning process. I hoped for better quality control on Sony's part... Bummer...
Just a note, lens was packed like new. No signs that it was opened before. Front element had no dust at all.
I wonder if this happened to anyone before? Grab a flashlight and look inside. Any smudges or dust inside your lens?

I ran into another sony shooter with the 200-600 which he bought new from one of the big shops online and had the same issue. He sent it into Precision camera and they saw the same thing and corrected it.

I believe that cleaning it cost him at least $150.
Let's wait and see if there are others with similar issue.
How about dust inside the lens? How "easily" it attracts dust? As one can see on the photo #1, there is significant amount of dust inside a brand new lens.

Just to bring this post up one more time for more people to see it.
Keep in mind that you need to shine the light at a specific angle to see this problem. It may take few seconds for your eyes to focus on it as well.
Sony advertises this lens as "a dust- and moisture-resistant design, ensure high reliability in challenging environments" but a brand new lens comes with dust already inside.

I have a brand new Sony 70-200 f2.8 GM. I haven't used it yet because I don't even have a Sony camera yet. (I am saving for an a9II) After reading on this forum about dust inside brand new Sony lenses, I decided to inspect my new lens. I shined a light through it and saw a lot of dust and a smear on one of the large lenses behind the front element. It looks like a wipe in a circular motion. I am really upset that a company which sells a lens that retails for $2,600.00 has such poor quality control. I bought it through Greentoe and my 30 day return period is over tomorrow.

I was surprised by a low QC on their part too.
It is very possible that the smudges/smearing won't affect the image quality, maybe just decrease the contrast, but we will never know if it has any negative affect on the AF performance.
One thing for sure, every Sony lens I'll buy, I will inspect and return if necessary. My brand new Sony 600mm f/4 prime has two small dust particles inside, no smearing, while my 6 year old Canon 600mm f/4 got the first dust particles inside after 4 years of use. I'm still in a return/testing period for the Sony 600mm...

I just received a new 135mm GM with dust inside and visible without having to shine a light in it. They are sending me a replacement. Many say dust will get in the lens anyway through use. Maybe but on a brand new 2000 lens unacceptable so decided to exchange it.

I've had the 200-600 since it was released, and after limited use I recently noticed dust or plastic debris behind the front element. There was also something (I'm assuming plastic particles) on the focus guides. Opened a case with Sony and took it to Photo Tech in NY who cleaned it under warranty without any trouble.
Sony was great opening the case, but listed the service as 'out of warranty' but Photo Tech said that they would be the ones to determine if it was warranty work or not - thankfully they sided with me.

I purchased a 70-200 2.8 and looked inside after doing the wide open aperture and pulling the battery to see a pretty large piece of lint. Not monstrous, mind you, just lots bigger than a speck of dust. Sent that sucker back and the replacement was flawless.
I don't know that there'll be many lenses without some bits of dust and I'm okay with that. Smudges though, no way.
