A selection of images taken in different parts of Karachi, Pakistan over two trips there (2017 and most from earlier this year). Hope you like them! The full set is available on my website. Karachi is a real gem for street photography and I highly recommend it.
Very nice set! Love the guy with the red hair and white beard! You should have pulled him aside for a "private shoot" and maybe ask him to change his white turban for a purple or red/yellow one! It's worth paying him something if you could get a great shot of him! His eyes and the lines on his face are priceless ... and so is his beard and hair, of course.

Thank you! Yes, I actually tried to get as much time with this man once I saw him. After getting a few versions of this image he walked off. He was ok complying with my request, but as you can imagine this draws a lot of attention and I think he was getting a bit shy. Would have loved to get more as you suggest.
That's too bad, as he is really photogenic. I would have followed him and offered to buy him a meal or coffee or something, and then tell him he will be appropriately compensated for his time and cooperation!

But I am struck by the fact that no one is smiling. Is life that difficult in Karachi for most people, or are they just wary with strangers?

Thank you and good question. That's a bit more to do with my style as I instructed them to relax. Sometimes I find that when people smile for me in a street photo (and in a busy spot like this where everyone takes notice), it's not the same natural smile they would use with friends. As such, when I see an unnatural smile I tend not to use the shot. I also tend to find that children tend to smile more naturally when I take out my big camera. They often seem less self-conscious:

Very nice set. Did u ask for their permission to photograph?
Thank you and thanks for asking. Yes I did, I stand out a bit walking around in these markets with a camera anyway, so getting permission was always the best way to get a number of photos and choose the one where the look was right.
Sure, I’d be happy to address that. There are women all over these markets, but usually they won’t allow a picture in these situations both because of how much attention I attract and because they can’t be sure what I will do with their pictures later. There is justifiable concern there about men posting pictures of women on social media and how it can put those women in a tough situation. I have respected that on my trips because they have to live with the results of their image being posted rather than me. Hope that makes sense.
