p.2 #1 · No Lossless RAW on A7R-IV

Just give us compressed RAW and full 16bit color depth

Canon has it, Nikon has it, even my loser Samsung camera has it!

No, Canon and Nikon have 14 bit lossless compressed RAW, not 16 bit.

I'm using uncompressed 14 bit Sony RAW. I'd like to get lossless compressed.

I just wish there was a DNG sort of solution for Capture one (i don't use lightroom).

Download the Adobe DNG converter. C1 works just fine with DNGs.

C1 can also export DNGs.

+1 on both.

I'd also be using uncompressed RAW. Files with lossless compression from my 50MP 5DSR top out at around 92 MB, but the vast majority average around 63 MB. If Sony had a similar compression ratio the RAW files would top out at around 110MB and most would average around 76MB instead of the 120MB Fred reports. That's an average savings of around 44MB per image, or 44GB per 1000 images. It's a significant savings in space on cards, and over the life of a camera it's a big savings in archive storage space and computer resources.

C1 seems can't read WB data properly from DNG converted from ARW(not sure about other formats, since I don't like converting raw format). I can adjust WB manually but that takes a little more time and efforts.

I always feel like I'm taking crazy pills when this issue comes up. I shoot compressed RAW, edit on a 4K monitor, and never see anything that I'd feel is worth complaining about during post. Does anyone have some concrete examples they can share images of?

I have seen those artefacts from my own files (A7R2), but it will take some time to dig them out.
I take a lot of cityscape shots, if I take night cityscape shots well past blue hour, with lots of neon lights, LED signs etc. against a dark sky, there is rather high chance artefacts can be found between light sources and dark sky.
Admittedly those are, IMO, usually not the ideal conditions to do night cityscape photography but that's not the point. Compression artefacts are there, and I'm sure there are other conditions that can trigger them. Cityscape night shots are usually using aperture that dust spots are visible but not so easily noticable so I need to spend some time pixel peeping them hence more likely discovered.

When I do more serious evening cityscape shots, I would switch to uncompressed raw, even during blue hours since I don't know the threshold of when artefacts would appear.

Lack of lossless uncompressed raw is really annoying.
I haven't stress tested A7R4 files, I have little interest in artefacts hunting.
