Rejoining this wonderful space after many years to see how others are getting on with their A7 R IVs - in particular with the FE200-600mm lens. On paper, and in the hand, this is an outstanding combination. I got my body with a couple of lenses as a test in early March. With the 24-105mm lens, I have seen some incredible image quality and the combination is beyond fault However the 'dream' combination of body with the FE200-600 has been a less happy experience, with some real disappointments along the way.
Looking through some outstanding images on this thread, it seems that many are having issues with subtle back-focus. It can be hard to spot, but it is present in way more images than I expected. I hasten to add, I am not reflecting on the quality of anyone's pictures - truly excellent, with some really beautiful pictures. This is more about the fact that issues with this camera appear to be more widespread than I initially thought, which is sad for all of use. I had very high hopes.
I went through a lot of these same issues with the Canon EOS-1D Mk III twelve years ago - I had 2 bodies and the arguments went backwards and forwards for months. Finally refunds were issued for some kit, deals for others. I thought that manufacturers had learned lessons. Sony clearly have not. If anyone has direct experience of Sony's response and handling of the focus issue, I would be really interested to hear.
Gorgeous Chris! My favorite of all the Swallows.
We used to have them nesting in the backyard, then they were
driven off by the Easter BlueBirds...little devils they are.
Has anyone tried the A7r4 with Canon/ Sigma telephoto lenses for moving subjects, particularly BIF? Would like to know how it performs compared to Sony 200-600G. I have not had the opportunity to test the Sony A7R4 & 200-600 combo enough because of the lock down but my preliminary experience is similar to what others have reported. On static subjects or perched birds the combo works great but i was disappointed with BIF shots. I did try playing around with some settings (like turning OS off, tracking sensitivity to 5, not use the tracking AF modes etc.) and that helped a bit but still not performing the way it should. I am really interested in knowing if the same problem exists even when using canon/sigma glass.

It works ok but then what i have posted here are the images in focus. There are hundreds of images that missed focus/ not sharp LoL. I primarily use Nikon D850/4002.8E with TCs and my shooting techniques are similar i.e i use short and controlled bursts. With my Nikon combo, i get 80-90% hit rate if i shoot 8-10 frames in a burst whereas with the sony combo, i just get 1 shot in perfect focus from a single burst. Also, while i am tracking and doing short bursts the AF points seem to be on the subject. It is just that when i review my images on the computer at 1:1, it is disappointing.

Anyone already tried long exposures? and see if it has the same behavior regarding thermal noise and hot pixels as the A7R III, and if possible dark frames
