Dan, you get an extra feature you didn't get with any of the Canon bodies (up to this point) with that lens, namely the IBIS!
Joshua...YES!!!!!!! With all the "Canon Rumors" out about 80+...108+ mirror less bodies coming.....with IBIS.....I will wait a bit and just enjoy everyone's posts. My good friend here, Douglas, has graciously offered me the use of his extra 7RIV-200-600 to use when I get the urge!
Keep up the great work here!! I am enjoying it immensely!!

Off the ground!!!
Finally, one of my nemesis bierds is off the ground for a semi-decent pic. Woot!
And again using the 400/5.6 but with 1.4TC where AF is just fine, almost snappy and sometimes snappy at any distance save MFD...speaking of. When adapted the MFD is way way out there. That's OK, rarely do I get close.

^^^^ I am 72 and my steadiness is not great with or without a gimble but I will be adding(not switching but on the fence as such) this or the upcoming Canon 80/100+ MP mirrorless for all my shooting. BIF are great but I just am not at that point at this age. But with IBIS..who knows!!??

So what's the general consensus ? Is it worth switching to A7r4 from A9 if I'm only occasionally doing BIF with 200-600?
My experience is that the A7Riv can do everything. I feel it is the current one ring. BIF is even easy, well the bierds I shoot (large raptor size bierds). You won't be giving up the really nice ergos of the a9ii--the Riv already has them. You'll also (theoretically) make bank on the switch from the a9ii to the Riv eh? and that money can buy masks, hand sanitizer, maybe even a nebulizer
Unfortunately I don't have the A9II, just the peasant version i.e. OG A9
Even though I don't need 60mpx I think A7r4 might be more versatile as I don't often do BIF or action. MedicineMan404 wrote:

I know the 'peasant' version. I bought my peasant used here off FM. I'll not know the
royal version and I just have to live with that. Regardless, today I shot with a Lumix GM-5
and nabbed a super rare visitor here today and was elated! I think we all get bummed in photography
from time to time, but nabbing that bierd put me on cloud nine and that little camera (16mpx) hasn't been made for quite some time. Just pushes the adage of what you've got and using it.
Robert,
Just curious, do you ever still use that old 400DOII? And how is it with a 1.4TC on the A7RIV? My A7RII, that I use with the Loxias, is aging a bit, and wonder if I might upgrade to the A7RIV if it will breath new life into the still stellar 400DOII..

Chris honestly it's been a while.
Like Geoff pointed out it is the same weight as my FE200-600, the 200600 is just
as sharp with a 1.4TC on the 400DOii, and the aperture advantage of the 400DOii with
the 1.4TC is meager at best. Rarely if ever do I enjoy the F4.......
So it gathers dust
Alas it has been so very good to me over the years...needs a new home I know.
R5 in the back of my head? No, not really....just no interest in Canon anymore. Loosing
interest in Nikon too, well besides the 500PF. That and the 300PF are the only draws to that
system.
Yeah I like walkaround with the Z50=doesn't hurt my back! But it's just that, a walkaround camera for me.
Need to get motivated and put the DOii on the B/S thread
Well, the upside is that Sony now covers all your needs, and what better way to shoot than one system only?
The downside, if you want to sell the 400DOII, that Canon big whites have lost a lot of value. I wrestled with that issue myself after getting the Nikon 500PF, and really wanting one system only myself. But to my surprise, having read so many good things about the Nikon combo, the Canon 400DOII remains my favorite lens by a good margin, even on the "long overdue for replacement" 7DII, and I intend to keep it for the rest of my birding life. So I am apparently not done with Canon yet and hence my future is a R5, R7 or a Sony A7RIV.
