I can cherry pick some good images (and I wouldn't even call the hummer critically sharp) but overall the AF is letting me down or else I need to up my shutter speeds...more testing starts Friday....

The Stellars is sharper than the hummer. On the J I can count individual long hairs/whiskers crossing his beak, I'd not complain about that at all. But the Stellars was bathed in light eh....light always helps.

I would try shooting at 1/2000 and see what happens. I have not found 1/800 to be fast enough for many situations.

Some shots from my first day with the A7RIV, on Mt. Killington, Vermont
Brought back great memories. I remember crossing Killington on the AT...couple days later slammed in a blizzard.
Really enjoyed the Vermont section of the trail.

In this regard the Riv reminds me of my 5Dsr ownership....always mindful of the ss and boosting 30% or more than normal. Situational of course.
Well I'm into 3 weeks of Riv ownership and still grin everytime I pick it up. Just a pleasure to hold. The 35/1.8 came today to play with, but with the UPS truck came the rain and cold weather.

Just a gorgeous place to wander up the woods. We had perfect weather. We were there this past weekend with my son and daughter-in-law. Last time my wife and I were there, our son was 15 and literally ran up the mountain with his younger brother.

I'm not complaining about the sharpness on the J...as I said it was cherry-picked out of a lot of duds. The hummer would normally be in the trash can any other day but I wanted to see if I could salvage it.

I'm sure it would but having to shoot at 1/2000 is useless to me. I usually shoot hummers at 1/400-1/800 and static birds at 1/200-1/800. If I have the light of course I will push SS up for safety but having to be at 1/2000 for perched birds would be a big no, no. Anyways, I got sharp shots with the A7RIV down at 1/200 so I know it is possible but I need to figure out if the AF is the big bottleneck...which so far I think it is, especially as the clouds rolled in.

Yes, 5DSR ownership experience is coming back to me now shooting the A7RIV....amazing IQ if everything comes together but getting everything to come together out shooting moving, tiny birds doesn't usually happen and therefore the 5DSR only lasted 7 months in my quiver...all be it better than the 3 months the 24MP (61MP equiv) 80D lasted
Anyways, I need many more days with this camera to really make a fair judgement. Stay tuned....

The humming bird photo is not of a perched bird tho. I don’t know if it is autofocus or not, but the whole image looks soft, it doesn’t look like focus was missed. Pixel level motion blur will obviously be worse with the increase in pixel density. I’m sure you know that though. And I’m sure you’ll figure out what works for you.

I know better than to judge one based on usage here in 'cloudland' which is to say any camera I get is for trips where there is at least a twinkling of Sun light. But I'll be first to admit to just liking gear and kit and monkeying around.
