I don't shoot flash often but I certainly need to pick one up for my A7rIII.
Godox website is a little less informative than I expected on features and making a comparison. I have heard and read that AF assist from flash was or is an issue on A7rIII ? Has this issue been addressed or
At the B&H website I brought them up to compare, from what I see it says that the 685 has a modeling light, but then I read somewhere it is activated by depressing the DOF button?? Hmmm, sorry I need some guidance here
Yes 685 is AA battery and Li-on with the V860. Not that important to me either way.
My use will be casual, non-pro, occasional people and more often table top product images for fun. Any input to help me decide on which one is appreciated.
Thanks
Karl
Get the V860. I made the mistake of buying 685s and they cruise through batteries and have slow recycle time. High end rechargeable batteries are also expensive and make up the savings.
The V860 lasts a long time and recycles very fast.

I have 3 x 860ii, none of them emits the af assist light. I heard you need the latest firmware, but I could never get the firmware update to work.
I was just researching and found out it looks like it is the XT1-s trigger that emits the AF light grid. I did pick up this trigger so maybe I'll be good on either flash I pick as long as I use the trigger. Was a thread here on FM with some tips on uploading the firmware but I believe it was for the XT1 not the flash itself.

The lithium battery is a really big feature. Convenience, number of shots, and recycle time are so important to a good shooting experience. Get the 860 series.
Owning both v860iis and tt350s, I found myself using tt350s a ton more because it's so compact. if you're like me, very occasional flash user, mostly indoor just bright the ambient lighting, then I would recommend to give 350 a try!

I have the XT1-S trigger as well. In fact I also have the XT1-C for Canon. Both do not emit af light. If you can figure out how let me know.
860ii is nice. V1s I like even more. Not an expert user by any means, but I just like things about the build, feel/design, and theory on the round-head.

That is a nice little flash! Might just pick one up to go with the bigger one, thanks for the tip and I see they have it in Li-on battery power now too, V350 model. Thanks!

I've owned the 685 and the 850 models and eventually replaced them with Sony flashes because of faster recycle times. You won't have that issue and that'll cost you hundreds $$$ less! Just be careful with knocking things about when the flash is attached; they have relatively weak bases and can easily break. Fortunately, there are Chinese firms selling inexpensive replacement bases. And be sure to reattach the connector protector when not in use. Those little wire pins can be easily bent!
