Not really Guy.
24 GM has something very important over the Tamron 17-28: 2-stop wider aperture. It can do things the Tamron cannot. Low light, better background separation at wide angle, serve as a decent 35/2 lens (or even better ~33/2 like the Rx1)...
This Samyang has nearly nothing. Same aperture and less range/versatility?
What this Samyang is offering other than being 280 grams lighter and a bit more compact? The Tamron is already light and unconspicous...

I'd also note how many times I'm talking to people about making the jump to full frame, but have to warn them "Just be aware, the lenses are SO much bigger, SO much heavier, and SO much more expensive." This type of lens is 100% part of the package that can lure them over from their a6000 + a few lenses. These people aren't looking for maximum image quality (yet...until they start reading this forum ). I've got to think Samyang & Tamron will be facilitating a lot of people making the jump to FF in the coming years.

I did and it has been sold. I used it for two jobs and it worked really well but having that kind of money tied up for a limited use lens had me wondering . Thing is i have a CV 12 and a CV 21 so I kind of have it covered but not AF but for 500 dollars and dropping daily. i think it would be worth having it. Its not a lot of money tied up and it would be limited use. But do remember I buy sometimes for a specific need than sell. Its like renting to me so dont take those moves as something is bad with the product.

It's a great option at 145g. It can augment the 24-105 with almost no weight or space penalty. Or if you are going ultralight (city walkaround or backcountry), this with the 35 (CV or Samyang) is again as light as you can go, including APS-C.
I see the argument for the Tamron 17-28, but at less than $500 this is a perfect supplemental lens not meant to replace a zoom or serious landscape/astro primes like the 15 f2 or Loxias.

I currently use the batis 18 for landscape and astro and really like it but this lens intrigues me. I do a lot of hikes or overnight backpacking trips so being less than half the weight and smaller is interesting. I'm sure it's fine stopped down (basically every modern lens is great stopped down) but I'm interested in its wide open performance for astro. I doubt it will be as good as the batis but if it is 80% as good then I'd consider making the switch as the weight and size difference is important to me. Anyone seen any early first looks/reviews that talks about astro performance yet?

Wow so with Samyang, Tamron, and Sigma, you're telling me I can get a 17-28/2.8 for $900, 18/2.8 for $400, 24/2.8 for $400, 28-75/2.8 for $880, a 35/1.4 for $700, a 45/1.8 for $400, and an 85/1.4 for $700 ?!
Cannot believe how easy it is to get into Full Frame with these 3rd party lens manufacturers and Sony's dominance of the mirrorless FF market. I remember when I got my A7R2 last year, I was concerned about how expensive Sony FE lenses were ...
Obviously pixel peeping is important , but probably not for a majority of photographers outside this forum ...

Flickr samples look pretty poor, looking at the full sizes. Quite unsharp wide open, with lots of aberration and even stopped down it doesn't look all that impressive on a 24MP A7III. Bokeh and sunstar look pretty ugly as well. Specs look good on paper, but I'm not hopeful after what I've seen so far. Seems like we may see similar performance to their 24/2.8, so if you liked that this might be acceptable, but most other similar lenses out there will be better performers (Batis, Tamron, Tokina, etc).

From my experience with the GF 23mm lens (18mm equivalent in FF), this FL is great as a super but not ultrawide angle solution and will fit nicely for those who own a 24-25 lens. I hope Loxia or Voigtlander decide to compete in this range too.

I bought the Rokinon 45 1.8 primarily due to it's size and weight. When I need the best optics in that FL range, I will always take my 50ZA, but the 45 1.8 is unbelievably small and light, and it totally transforms the shooting experience.
Looks like this 18/2.8 is similarly small and light, so that in itself is enough reason to consider it for some people if the optical performance is average to above average like the 45 1.8. The 45 is surprisingly sharp.
If the 18/2.8 has below average to poor performance where it makes you cringe every time you pick it up, then the weight and size savings don't amount to much, as you can always use a phone with a superwide lens, or in my case, use my tiny, but razor sharp Canon EF-M 11-22 with my EOS M6.
I'll have to wait for some reviews to decide between the Samyang and the Tamron 17-28. A likely future price cut on the Samyang would definitely make it an impulse buy ($300-350). If it drops within that range, it may even coexist in my collection with a Tamron 17-28.
I got the Rokinon 45 1.8 for $340 after a 20% off coupon right after it came out. Just couldn't resist at that price. I may end up doing the same with the 18 if the reviews are somewhat decent.

I would be perfectly happy if someone makes a 18/2.8 lens that weighs 145g and costs twice as much but has a good IQ. Nikon Z shooter here looking for an occasional wide astro lens. The 14mm Rokinon is too damn heavy and big. If this had decent coma I would be all over it as soon as (or maybe if?) it comes out in Nikon mount. Currently using a Nikon 20/1.8 with an adapter for astro. The sh*ttiest focus ring ever. Unfortunately the Nikon 20/1.8 Z, when it comes out sometime next decade, will almost certainly be well over $1000. Thanks but no thanks.

It is a pity that Samyang makes AF lenses in their repertoire, no aperture ring and switch AF/MF. Moreover, it is important for wide angle lenses, and even AF is not needed (I)

If you don't know Tech Art makes an adapter for the Nikon Z cameras that let's you use Sony E mount lenses. AF doesn't work great with the adapter, but it let's you use a lot of lenses. I doubt this lens will be very good for astro, but you might look into the Batis 18, which is quite good for astro.
