I was at a venue a couple of nights ago and visited with a gentleman about his A9 paired with Canon 400 2.8 ii, I asked how he liked and would he be getting the A9 ii, he replied "No sir,I have a friend/fellow photographer who has had two different camera bodies covered in gaffers tape at a recent sporting events, what Canon has coming will BLOW YOU AWAY". I mentioned that I had considered the A9, his response was definitely wait. I am hopeful he is correct.

If it has best-in-class AF and 28MP I’ll pre-order it as soon as they go live. 30FPS would either have to be with focus locked or the camera would have to have a hybrid viewfinder, neither of which would be particularly useful but if they can bump the continuous shooting with tracking by a few frames that obviously would be welcome. 28MP would be a perfect all around resolution for me, I have no reason to ever need more than that with software like Gigapixel AI now.

How will you know if it has "best in class AF" when preorders open? Because Canon says so? Because some Explorer of Light were contracted to say so? Just curious....

You know...you make a solid point. This is what happens when you read an exciting rumor during happy hour

I will say though, I’ve used a D850 and the autofocus in that was fantastic. I don’t think it’s a far stretch of the imagination to think that Canon can release a flagship with AF that’s at least as good or slightly better than that. If they do, that will sell me.

Best is better than the 1DX II and just maybe the soon-to-be-obsolete D5. The alpha series is not the same class and they don't have a D6 to compare.

MP is key to me. I'm almost hoping it is not 28MP that is just at the edge of acceptable.

I would be happy with 24MP but if they can get 28MP to perform on the same level as the 1DX II is then I’ll gladly take that. I agree though, it’s sad that we have to hope that this camera will be better than a four year old model but really all that I want is better tracking in low contrast situations (where Nikon’s Group AF excels) and when subjects are coming towards me.

I still have some faith left in Canon. If they are going to improve the AF they had better do it on this release.
Yes the D500, D850, D5 and A9 all have excellent AF systems that outperform the 1DXII. Not that the 1DXII isn't capable in most situations. But the Nikon and Sony systems just get things done easier and more consistently.

I'm interested to see what the 1DXIII brings to the table. It took me a little while to commit to the 1DXII from my 1DX upgrade back in 2016 but I was very happy after doing so. But to consider a $6K+ DSLR camera ( be it 1DXIII or D6) in 2020 is a tough ask these days. It had better wow us!!

Sounds good as long as AF gets a big overhaul. Needs to fix stability in bursts and against busy backgrounds, better able to latch on to lower contrast objects and have greater AF coverage. All points x-type at f/5.6, big central chunk at f/8. Higher resolution colour meter sensor, and greatly improved tracking. If They do that then I'll be back after skipping 1DXII and selling my 1DX for D500 and A9. Neither of which is going anywhere, but I still have my Canon 500 f/4 and 300 f/2.8 which would be nice to use natively again. Can't see Sony releasing 500 f/4 soon and if they do it'll be close to $16K where I live, they want ~$22K for the 600 f/4 in Australia!

Still would prefer this to be mirrorless with the benefits that brings as long as it's a stacked sensor to get the benefits required of sports camera.

I'm expecting relatively small, incremental improvements in the 1DX3 for a few reasons. This is a place holder camera for Canon as they slowly and ponderously move to mirrorless. It's primary customers are media that are pretty happy with the current file size and quality, and the 1DX2 already does everything they want. The only real difference with the competition is AF, as we have been discussing, and if Canon doesn't improve that then they really will have problems. Finally I don't see Canon drifting away from their market segmentation strategies, even though it is costing them customers moving to Sony and Nikon, where each camera is less crippled.

On the other hand, if one was to dream, then what I want is a 1DX2 whittled down 10% in all dimensions and more in weight with IBIS that combines with lens IS, a ~60MP sensor and pixel binning tech to produce 24MP for the sports shooters. Sort of a D850 in wolves clothing. Throw in effective focus bracketing and I might even be in. ;*) Still holding on to my 400DO and 600/4 so I guess that says something.

There is no way that 30FPS is with the mirror and OVF. Therefore it is basically a non-feature as using LV for action via a rear screen is very difficult

Consider it a beta test as part of an internal battle in Canon. Someone needs to convince conservative forces that mirrorless is the future. They need to make LV DPAF better and faster than mirror AF, in the same camera, so everyone can see that the mirror is a hindrance to further progress. DPReview already found the LV AF of the 90D to be better and more reliable than mirror AF. If the same thing happens in the 1DX III, the road is clear for Canon to go all in on mirrorless.

Beware of the internet rumours, experts and hi-tech fortune tellers.
Victims of their own gullibility on the Sony forum are spitting venom. They expected a 50% sensor resolution bump, higher fps, mind controlled focusing and much more. Instead they got a camera with integrated walkie-talkie and a new box. Nobody complains about the real issue, the price of a consumer grade camera which is far beyond its value.
.

This one is particularly amusing: Someone considering switching to Sony, put the plans on hold due to the lack of revolutionary upgrades in the latest Sony releases. Then someone else suggests that it would be better to switch to the previous generation Sony, instead of waiting for the next Canon move.

The only thing the mirror is preventing in cameras is the full progress of photographers to mirrorless. Mirrored cameras have outstanding AF systems that work better than most mirrorless, and have decent burst rates up to 14fps, so I fail to see why mirrored cameras are so terrible.

Until mirrorless sensors use a global shutter, can track fast moving subjects with ease, have no discernible blackout between frames of a burst, the EVF is like looking at an OVF, is ergonomic both in form and usage/menus, and the costs to own this are sub $3000, there won't be a full defection to mirrorless.

Historically, new technologies have penetrated the market past 99% long before every aspect of it has been as good as the technology it replaces. On the other hand, a few people will continue to use the old technology long after the new technology is better in almost every aspect and far better in most.

PRIORITIES:

The 1DX series is prioritized for Photojournalist who makes a living capturing fast moving action, and have no chance to re-shoot it, and they have different priorities in camera performance than any other type of photography where re-composition , trying different settings, and/or if missing the shot altogether is of minimal consequence.

They prioritize fast & accurate AF, fast data transfer, and superior “low-light” performance far above “mega” MP.

I'd like a fast two-seater sports car, that functions like a mini-van when I want to carry more passengers, and a truck if I need to haul a ton of equipment; but there would appear to be some obstacles in achieving such a design.

I ran into a Canon rep while shooting an XC meet recently, I mentioned many people are switching to Sony for mirrorless, his response was don't jump ship yet, you will be VERY happy with what is coming. Another data point, a pro sports photographer on a sports photography Facebook page mentioned he used the 1DxIII in Japan last month and it is a beast.

I probably can't afford to upgrade to a Sony A9 or a 1DxIII anyways, but I am looking forward to what they release all the same for when I can. With the Olympics coming next year, if I had the funds to upgrade and could wait a few more months, I would wait and see what is released.

Tough for me to decide really. Not sure what the 1DX3 will look like but if it's still a DSLR do I really want to spend upwards of $7K on it with a 1DR potentially waiting in the wings in 2021.

If it has "blow me away" features it's going to be damn tempting though. Then again are we just getting on the same hype train that the A9II had? Too many unknowns. I wish Canon would announce something soon even if the release date isn't until Spring 2020.

Anyone expecting a significant jump in video specs over the 1dxii? Maybe 10bit and c log?

I think this will be an real upgrade issue for many with the 1dx2 or even 1dx, if it's waiting another year till 2021 for the 1dr to come out it would be easy to hold out and cost effective. Hard to believe Canon would introduce anything mind-blowing at this point given past history.

Their past history
EOS was pretty mind-blowing!!!
How about IS in all the big whites, I’d say so.
The 5D was pretty mind-blowing too, as was the 5ll.
I found the 5Ds pretty mind-blowing every time I pixel peep a portrait! All the Nikon guys were pretty mum about that!!
The 7D and ll were mind-blowing as well.
The 1Dx is a workhorse, I shoot mine in the pouring rain and it’s never skipped a beat!! Anyway, that sure blows MY mind!!!
I’m pretty darned sure the mklll will blow it better!!! LoL
