That would mean the metering sensor would have to have 282 megapixels, which is very unlikely.

28x resolution may refer to finer resolution of the AF sensor, not in terms of focus points but the resolving ability of the focus sensors, i.e. it may be able to detect 28 times smaller focus errors.

I really doubt they're talking about linear resolution, I assume that's where you're getting the 282 MP number, as Canon has never talked about resolution in those terms, always in terms of area resolution. That would mean a ~10MP metering sensor which seems high but not unreasonable.

Resolution is defined as the shortest distance between two objects that can be reliably distinguished from each other, and it is a linear measure. The phase-detect sensors in the autofocus system are 1-dimensional image arrays, so linear resolution is the only one that exists in that context. I can't remember ever having seen a camera manufacturer advertise a multiplication of resolution of a 2-dimensional image sensor by referring to relative increase in pixel count as this would be grossly incorrect, and the engineers certainly know that.

Canon say "When using the optical viewfinder the EOS-1D X Mark III makes use of a new autofocus sensor offering approximately 28x the resolution in the centre of the sensor than the one in the EOS-1D X Mark II ". The autofocus sensor is the phase-detect AF sensor, not the exposure meter sensor. They refer to resolution in the center of the sensor - the phase-detect AF sensor has the best performance using the center point, this is well-known and true of all autofocus DSLR cameras. By contrast, the exposure meter sensor (which is used to assist in subject recognition and tracking autofocus) has the same resolution at each point of the image area, it cannot have different resolution in the center from the outer areas of the sensor. So they must be referring to the phase-detect AF sensor.

There are many definitions of resolution, and you cannot say that only one is correct.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image_resolution

"The term resolution is often considered equivalent to pixel count in digital imaging"

Yes, in common parlance, but the manufacturers do distinguish between pixel count and resolution, and it's hard to find an example where they'd have used the terminology incorrectly. In science, optics and physics resolution is defined in terms of smallest distance where two objects can be reliably distinguished, as I said.

It is hard to find any precedence at all on how the camera manufacturers use relative resolution of sensors.

This thread will grow from 19 pages to 29 pages real quick once the MP count is released...patiently waiting.

...assuming it is not already 29 pages before the MP is released.

So much for the rumor about press being able to put a card in the camera and shoot with it...still waiting for this megapixel count.

Yeah, considering that the other rumour is a Feb announcement, I found that press rumour to be a big long shot....No way they'd have these in the press' hands if the announcement is 2+ months away still. I'm sure some Explorers of Light are already using it but they won't be sharing photos or talking about it till Feb.

Since the Euro guy is using a 2x TC I suspect it may be a low-res body.

He's shooting motorsports with a 400 on a FF body... he needs a 2x TC no matter the pixel count.

guess you need the reach.. check this clip; he's standing in a position that gives you a view on the corner right after the start (0:09 seconds in).

Anyway, this guy knows much more than we do for sure; he's a Canon Ambassador

No they don't.
They know nothing and only get a sealed body. don't even know how many MP.
Cann't even use the pic's out that body.
His job, to test the body and to recognized the lacks.

I know, I relayed that info and went back to CR to find out what happened but they’ve gone quiet. Obviously BS in hindsight.

Still, he’s able to use (some) functions, test the AF, etc right? So they surely must know at least somewhat more than we do which is practically nothing

I take it you didn't see any "full res" agency photos. Vast majority of them are from in camera JPEGs with in camera noise reduction and in camera sharpening, that usually has very large sharpening radius applied. The photos look like they have a petroleum jelly smeared on them and the details are gritty with very little fine details visible. Thank the "need" for super fast delivery over quality mentality for that.

20MP is very depressing if true, and of no interest at all. It defies belief they cannot offer even 24MP, no wonder they kept their mouth shut on that front. I hope EOS Rs can track well and offers at least 5-6fps.
