FYI: I received a Kase 6-stop ND today and I was able to attach it to the rear slot. However, when removing it, the filter broke in half inside the lens. My only hope now is the Aurora magnetic NDs...The Haida NDs are too thick and the Kase NDs are too fragile and hard to install.

I could live with the CPL and 2 dark CPLs (like a 3 and 6 stop.) I wonder if anyone will make them for the Nisi setup.

I'm going to slum it lugging around my Laowa 15, Batis 18, Loxia 21, and GM 24.....at least for a while.

Here is a version using the Loxia 21/2.8:

I actually prefer the sunstar from the Sigma better for this scene. How about you?

I agree, the star with more rays works better here to me. The loxia one loses some of the rays in the highlights and it comes out a bit less even. Both are great shots though 👍

Nisi already have two regular CPL filters, the "pro" (slightly warm) and "landscape" (slightly cool), as well as a 6-stop dark CPL ("CPL ND64") for the S5 system.

Agreed, the magnetic feature of the Aurora makes it the only rear option I would consider for field work. Let's hope it works well.

" took 3 exposures for this shot. One focused at infinity, another at close distance (for the foreground rocks) and a last one for the sunstar (f/18).
So, f/8 for infinity, f/5.6 for the rocks and f/18 for the sunstar.
The sunstar shot at f/8 does not look bad but at f/18 is better defined."

Did you use the same settings and three shots when using the Loxia?

Setting aside the sunstar, I think the Sigma out performed the Loxia if it was shot with same settings and 3 exposures

For the Loxia I took 2 exposures. (f/7.1 for the foreground and f/7.1 at infinity)
The Sigma 14-24 @21mm performs very similarly to the Loxia 21.

I have a pretty strong preference for the Loxia sunstars. I am distracted by the short arms on the side of the Sigma shot that I am not with the Loxia sunstars. That said I do like the 14mm perspective better. Both seem to be very nice lenses.

Thanks for the feedback Steve and Graham.
Just for a sunstar comparison, here is a version from the Voigtlander 10/5.6:

I really like these 10mm shots. This subject seems to love a very wide angle, and I still like the results from the 10 blade aperture for sunstars the best.

Well Fred I had the same problem. I recieved my Kase set of 3 ND Filters ND8, ND64 and ND1000 yesterday. I was getting very good at mounting them and un-mounting them. I successfully mounted the ND8 and ND64 a dozen or so times each and when I tried the ND 1000 I was successful for 5-6 mounts and un-mounts when it just cracked! It happened during the un-mounting and I think the problem develops due to having to get a finger on the top edge of the filter while the tab is still primarily inserted in the slot the tension is too much for the ND filter material. The filter material is just too rigid and thin with very little tolerance for flexing at all.

The other thing is while I got very good at finding the correct angle and spot to insert the filter in the lens it is not something I can see feeling very comfortable doing outdoors in the field even in calm and daylight conditions. I can't imaging trying to attempt inserting and changing these filters while in less ideal conditions with wind or snow etc.. The only way I can see these being used for any outdoor use would be to have one already mounted carefully indoors and just keep it mounted for use and un-mounting once you are back indoors or in a nice controlled environment (e.g. car or campsite).

I'll stick with my NiSi Filter set and live with the extra bulk and weight for the convenience of easier use. I had hoped that maybe this would be a nice solution to use along with my NiSi CPL but now I'll just use my NiSi CPL and the combo 6 stopND+CPL and 10 stop ND until maybe a better solution comes along.

Yes, not practical in the field. As you can see from my image above, the tab broke off and the piece remained inside the slot.
So far I was not able to remove it.

That's the reason Aurora thought about the magnetic idea where one section would always remain inside the lens and the ND filter would just attach magnetically. Due to coronavirus, they don't have any estimate for availability though since it's made in China.

Spoke too soon. Just got this email from Aurora:

"Hi Fred,
We’re expecting a fulling functional prototype any day now.
Will let you know as soon as have progress."

Has anyone with a broken Kase filter contacted them about it?

I haven't had mine break, but I also haven't used them all that much yet. Now I'm a bit wary and wondering if I should return them.

Well let's hope that the Aurora solution works much better than the other solutions we have tried so far!

It still doesn't solve the need for a large external CPL solution so I don't really see much advantage to using the rear mount filter system in my outdoor photography where I use a CPL much more than I use ND filters. The drop-in filters used on a lot of Super Telephoto lenses would be the ideal solution if it is possible make it work for a UWA lens like this excellent Sigma lens.

Yeah, I'm wondering if I should just get a 150x150 ND for those times I need one in addition to the polarizer...I can then just throw it on the filter holder in addition, though then I'd have to carry the square bracket and the big ND filter too.

I just sent mine back for a full refund to Amazon. No problem so far I'll see if the return is processed in the next 7-14 days, but I've never had a problem returning a defective item with Amazon before.

Jordan,

You do not need to have the square filter holder for the NiSi system ND filters as they are round screw in filters. See the picture of the three that I use below. The ND64&CPL filter is a nice combo filter giving you a CPL that you can rotate for the proper effect with the 6-stop ND filter effect combined in a single round filter. I also find that the round CPL filter alone provides enough of a darkening effect when used at very low ISO 50-100 for most waterfalls. It would great if NiSi comes out some day with a variable density ND&CPL combo filter for this system. I was hoping that the Kase rear filters sound be used with the NiSi CPL and ND64&CPL to provide some additional ND effect options but they are just not practical in use.

Has anyone thought of or used the stc magnetic clip in filters with this lens? Maybe it could be an option or maybe just a recipe for disaster.

Chuck, I have the Nisi with landscape CPol, but I do not want to shell out another few hundred for an ND+polarizer, and I don't want to have to change the screw in filters in the field....I keep my NISI with the dedicated cap on it so I never need to worry about attaching and removing it.
