Does the new Sony sensor behave differently off-axis on the CV 12 and 15mm lenses then? I cant see the relatively small bump in MP being the culprit. I would guess that other lenses would also be affected?

Even though it's only a ~20% increase in linear resolution, I'm finding 61mp surprisingly more revealing than 42mp. What looks sharp at 42mp (100%) doesn't necessarily do so at 61mp, and the differences between lenses are more noticeable . Of course the CV lenses haven't suddenly become worse, but the improvement in going to a sharper lens like the Sigma zoom will be more apparent (if you print large enough or pixel peep).

Agreed. I toiled long and hard to get the very best 24-70mm GM and it’s one of the biggest disappointments on the R4. It’s nowhere near my most used lens but does perform well enough on the R3. Once you know it underperforms on the 60 your still less likely to use it regardless. On the flip side though, the wee CY 35-70 held up very well

Ok im just going to stop pixel peeping, until next month

They were already not that great off-axis on the R3.
Mounted on the R4, the discrepancy between center and corners is even steeper. Right now, the ultra wide Sigma and Sony zooms are performing better than the compact primes.

I found a nice alternative to the included OEM soft case for carrying my NiSi V6 Filter Holder and ND and CPL filters in my camera bags. I'm posting some quick pics of my setup using a Think Tank Trim Changer to carry the V6 Filter Holder with Landscape NC CPL in place and the NiSi IR ND 10-Stop Filter and the NiSi Combo 6-Stop IR ND + CPL Filter. I'm showing it with one of my most often used day packs the MindShift Photocross 15 backpack.
In the Photocross 15 backpack I have my A7RIV with Batis 40mm attached, Batis 85mm under the Sony A7RIV with a padded divider in-between, Sigma 14-24 DG DN Art (with the Sony 2.0x and 1.4x teleconverters under it and a padded divider) and Sony 100-400 GM (when I want go lighter I switch out with my Batis 135mm). In the front zippered compartment of the bag I can easily slide in the Think Tank Trim Changer with the NiSi V6 Holder and 3 NiSi Filters and on top of that the Lee Seven5 Filter kit with 67mm adapter ring (for all the Batis lenses) and 72mm adapter ring (with a 77mm step up ring for the 100-400 GM). In the Seven5 case are the following Seven5 filters; CPL, 3-stop IRND, 6-stop IRND, 10-Stop IRND, plus a 67mm Zeiss screw-in CPL and a 77mm screw-in CPL.
So while the NiSi Filter Holder and Filters are huge in comparison to the Seven5 filters they really can be carried fairly easily with this setup. The weight of the bag is not at all a problem for most of my day shooting and shorter hiking trips.
I just received a Tamron 17-28mm lens to test out against my Batis 18mm. I would normally switch the Sigma 14-24mm out with the Batis 18 if I need to go lighter but that means I need to include a separate 77mm screw-in filter kit for the Batis 18 since it will hard vignette with the Seven5 filters. If the Tamron performs well compared to the Batis, I would switch the Sigma out with the Tamron when going lighter and the Lee Seven5 filter kit with just the 67mm adapter will work with all of my lenses.

Having a hard time making this call. First zooms and me are like water and oil. Than there is size and weight and I'm having a really hard time giving up my CV21 1.4 and my CV 12. Than this whole filtering mess let's call it what it is a cluster mess.

I use the Nisi CPL with breakthrough photography 150mm square filters, 3 stop and 6 stop. I can easily fit the Nisi CPL and one 150mm into Lee 150mm filter tin. Lee also makes a 150mm filter wrap, which I use to divide the filters in the case. I usually take a CPL with a 6 stop ND.

Here is a comparison in size between the Sigma 14-24/2.8 DN vs Sony 24/1.4 GM. Many think the Sony prime is a compact lens but the Sigma zoom is not that much bigger with their hoods attached. I thought the FE 12-24/4 was pretty compact but the Sigma, being a stop faster, is even more so. I used to carry the Nikon 14-24/2.8 adapted to Canon/Sony and it's a big difference in size. (...and IQ)
I'm loving the new Sigma E lenses designed for mirrorless.

This just makes Sigma’s accomplishment with their new 14-24/2.8 even more impressive.

What do you think of the image quality and colors of the Sigma 14-24/2.8 DN versus the Sony 12-24?

Do you miss the 2mm wider of the Sony?
I no longer own the FE 12-24/4 G to test them side by side but imo the Sigma 14-24/2.8 is noticeably better off-axis. One of the reasons I sold the Sony was because of its color rendition and flare resistance. The Sigma zoom is on-par with Voigt and Zeiss colors and has better flare performance. (Not as good as the primes though)
I will post some comparisons this weekend.
12mm is noticeably wider than 14mm but not that much. It's a bigger difference to 15-16mm.

I'll be curious to compare the Sigma to the Sony 12-24 too, but it will be a little while before I get the A7RIV. Thanks to a little Google searching, based on the past couple of years, it looks like both Voigtlander and Sony will have good Black Friday sales. I expect that I'll save $600-700 on the camera + 2 lenses by waiting ~ 7 weeks to get them. No big deal, it's not like I need them right away, and I'll be happy to get them at a decent savings.

If you use NDs and don't want big front 150mm filters, the Sigma also has the advantage of the rear filter slot. To me, this is a big consideration in size and price because you can buy a Lee gel sheet for $7 and make dozens of filters from it.

Very interesting, Fred. Thanks. It would also be of great interest to have a comparison to the 16-35mm GM, which in some ways may be the closest competitor.
