Yep. The most impressive part is size. It is simply lovely. It is right there around 300-350g that Leica 50 and 35lux at. and can be as landscape lens stop down as lux as well. A perfect three lens setup for me for M

My MSOptics 73mm 1.5 is 196g!

And given I like the softer sonnar draw at 1.5 and it's much better corrected at f2 and especially 2.8, I can't seem to get so excited about the CV.

Except the ergonomics of the 73 Sonnetar stink (though I am use to them), the long MFD and poor flare resistance. Then the CV 75 looks quite enticing. Choices, choices, choices...

imoretti: thanks so much for the lovely images, particularly the kids. Your intended use is also mine. A well-grounded artistic draw, imperturbable, classic Sonnar-like. It will be my 100/3.5 at a shorter FL. I like that Cosina is building their own aesthetic pathway here, and has the courage to release such lenses. More strength to their arm.

Thank you for your compliment, Philip. For several years now, I’ve been looking to fill my MF gap from 40 to 125 since I sold my Nikon 85/1.4D. (I still have a Nikon 105/2.5 Ai-S, but honestly I’ve only mounted it two or three times. Great little lens, but just doesn’t open up enough.) Was pulled to the 1.4/85 Planar or even Milvus for a bit. I was surprised when I opened the box to see how small it was compared to my VM 21/1.2... I wondered if I hadn’t made a mistake by choosing a heftier lens like the Milvus. The results on my Z7 have quickly demonstrated that I made the right choice, including the price point. Reading reviews of the lens, like with many other lenses, I suppose it helps that I’m not an expert in optics or a pro. Looking forward to getting out on the road with it for some less familiar sights and subjects.

I’m curious as to all of your thoughts on this Voigtlander 75/1.5 vs the Leica 75/2 APO.

From the sample photos I’ve seen, the Voigtlander 75/1.5 has more character, while the 75/2 APO is a bit more corrected and say...possibly...sterile? I have the 75/2 APO and was thinking about selling it for this Nokton 75/1.5, but I suffer quite a bit from sellers remorse. Haha! Anyways, I know selling the 75/2 APO would definitely cover the cost of a new Nokton 75/1.5 with some extra to spare (that 50/3.5 Heliar does look tempting...), but what are your thoughts on the two lenses?

75mm APO has the same design formula as 50lux which is one of my favorite lens. It offers very nice bokeh that also has FLE to improve close range contrast. (a con for VC75mm if you want high contrast close range shooting) it is only about 430g, which is not much heavier than nocton. If I have 75APO, I will not consider Nocton myself but that is just me. My past experience is selling a leica seems always having sellers remorse in the end

Usually, I have a hard time to justify both 50 and 75 when I travelling as I seldom took both, but for a day of city out shooting, take 35 and 75 seems make a lot of sense.

Nokton 75 has nice bokeh and I like it and as mentioned I feel the biggest selling points are speed, size, price for a Leica M users to cover additional(maybe not used often) focal without breaking bank. I kept my 90APO M, as each has its own merits and its use, having a 90 APO and 75APO is maybe too much for me but not a problem with Nocton 75mm I feel, of course its size and performance are cherry on top.

Thank you for your input! I’ve sold my fair share of Leica gear over the years and one thing I’ve learned is that I always miss them when they’re gone. I actually miss the lenses more when they’re gone, the bodies not as much. I must be weird, as I love the 50mm and 75mm focal lengths. Despite them being relatively so close in focal length, I have a much easier time getting my composition right and nailing focus (on a Leica body). I generally stay away from lenses wider than 50mm on Leica bodies since I wear glasses (and cannot wear contacts) which obstructs the frame lines within the rangefinder and frustrates me to no end. Even with Sony’s great EVF, I still migrate to normal and longer focal lengths...which is why I was very curious about this Nokton 75/1.5. I just gel with the 75mm focal length and seeing a lot of photos taken with it reminds me of the Nokton 50/1.5 I once owned. To me, the 75/1.5 has a lot of the 50/1.5 character and rendering. Since I like to put my subjects about a 1/3rd into the frame, I use to struggle with my subject’s eyes/face being in focus with the 50/1.5, which I hope this 75/1.5 doesn’t have the same issue. Sharp in the center, but with mid-field drop off. I don’t recall my 75 APO giving me such trouble, but then again it’s an f/2 and a bit better corrected. I’m just really drawn to the Nokton’s wide open rendering. Perhaps this is a situation where owning both lenses would be better as one could chose the look they’re after, but at the same time risk putting a lens off for a long time that would bring back that whole “should I sell this lens since I rarely use it?”......which can lead to some pretty bad sellers remorse much later.

Thank you for your reply! I’m going to sit on this one for a while. I have a fond attachment to the 75mm focal length and the 75 APO doesn’t really disappoint. It may be that I’m just looking for something a little different and not as a replacement.

Edit: Spelling

You might find 75 nocton and 75cron are more similar than different. both offer quite smooth bokeh, both having pretty good performance cross frame. 75cron might have slightly better color correction and if you have other leica glass, it will give you better color consistence.

I fully understand your view about difference 50 and 75 is big enough to justify shoot together, I agree with you. Like I mentioned, I could see myself bring 35/50/75 lux(or f1.4/1.5) set with me. I begin less and less interest in wide and long glass shooting. But for me, for travel, I prefer I can space my focal a little better, so 28/50/90 seems always make the first cut.

Good luck with your decision. If you buy Nocton, you will face the situation keep one of them IMHO. I know I would, however, if I have 75cron, I will not consider Nocton as my first reply indicated

I'd recently decided a CV F(or S)E 21/1.4, 35/1.4, and 75/1.5 native MF kit would be about perfect. At this point the chances of that option being available is unlikely though. Has CV ever taken this long to announce a lens being ported over to another mount?

I'm not sure if it will happen but the CV 75/1.5 VM performs the same on Leica and Sony:

I've followed that point closely, and appreciate you pointing that out. I really just prefer my M's on my M's and my S/FEs on my Sony.

I'm the same way and totally agree that the E-mount offers many advantages like EXIF transmission, auto 5-axis IBIS, auto-magnification and built-in profile. However, if there are no changes or tweaks in the optical design, I prefer using M-lenses for both Leica and Sony.

Currently my list of lenses with equal performance in both systems are:

CV 12/5.6 III VM
CV 15/4.5 III VM
CV 21/3.5 VM
CV 35/1.2 VM*
CV 75/1.5 VM

*This lens is almost as good but there is some induced field curvature especially at mid-field. Not bad performance on Sony though. (Better on Leica)

It's a shame that off-axis, the CV 50/1.2 VM does not perform well on the Sony, (worse than the 35/1.2) otherwise I would just get the VM and use for both cameras. This one I have both E and M mount.

Mark of a good lens, the 75 1.5 never seems to come up on the buy&sell forum! I should know, I keep checking :-)

I love Voigtlander lenses, but not for normal to portrait focal lengths.
EyeAF is a feature too good to give up for the sake of arguably better bokeh in manual focus lenses.

My preference right now for a compact/light semi-portrait lens is the Samyang FE 75mm f1.8, and for normal focal lengths is the Zeiss/Sony FE 55mm f1.8. Both are conveniently compact, offer acceptable image quality and utilise EyeAF.

I think the Samy 75 is great for what it is. I enjoy mine. Just had mine out last night on my dog walk.

I do wish the AF was a hair quicker so it could track moving dogs well like the 55ZA.

Samyang hasn’t released a FW update have they?

Nice photos of a beautiful fur kid 😉
No, Samyang haven’t released a firmware for the 75, but TBH I haven’t found fault with it.

There’s no fault—just wish it were slightly zippier so I could use it for all purposes. The 55 ZA is perfect for a small, fast, high IQ prime with lovely rendering with blazing AF. But I don’t like the 50mm FL too much.

At some point though, I’ll get the CV 75/1.5 and 75 Cron...they are both in my list.

A bit o/t, but I recently picked up the VM 21/3.5 after waffling between it, the Loxia, and the Nokton. I have a really hard time finding fine focus with it on my A7RIII--hence my mention Nokton above. With an RF, it's no problem.

Yes.

The 75 APO seems to have blistering micro-contrast, higher contrast bokeh and sharpness from WO making for a harsher rendering portrait wise, while the CV 75 takes a bit to full sharpen up especially a little softer at near/mid distance, which is favorable for portraits and generally makes for an aesthetic I prefer.
