Any idea how good is the lens for sharpness at infinity compared to the Batis 40mm?

It is quite good at infinity--see Fred's tests earlier in the thread. I don't think he directly compared it to the Batis 40, however.

Saw the deal and am on the fence still because of the reported AF issues. This lens is right up my alley for family stuff. Is the AF that bad? I'm good with slow AF...but inaccurate AF I can't tolerate.

Best to avoid this lens if AF-C is a requirement. I'm only interested in AF-S and that works perfectly. Manual focus is also excellent due to the linear response. I have many manual-focus lenses and manually focus the AF ones also.

Thanks. Yeah looked through those - seems like the Sigma is better than the Sony 35mm but no direct comparison with the Batis 40mm. On the fence with this lens since I have the Batis already (would swap out if I get this) and it's only 2.8 but like the smaller size of the Sigma so worth it if sharpness and bokeh are better.

I think the Batis 40 and this Sigma 45 are very different lenses. The Batis is clearly better close up (one of the Sigma's weaknesses), but the Sigma has amongst the lowliest bokeh I have seen in a 45mm lens (IMO, one of the Batis weaknesses). They both are sharp stopped down and at infinity focus for landscapes (a clear strength of both),but both of these lenses have also had their issues with AF in AF-C mode (a weakness of both). My view is the the Sigma makes a better portrait lens and the Batis probably makes a better general purpose lens especially if you value its close focus ability. The other major differences are obvious. The Batis is a stop faster but also quite a bit bigger. Both can be excellent choices.

I’ve had Batis 40 and Sigma 45. Very different, not interchangeable. The Batis is the better all around, general purpose lens and AFC performance is definitely better than the Sigma (with weaknesses in a very specific set of circumstances). The Sigma is more a special purpose lens when you want to leverage its particular strengths. MF experience is great on the Sigma and I likewise found AFS fast and accurate.

Think that's a fair assessment - spent the day thinking about this lens - even ordered and canceled it from B&H. I recently purchased the Sigma 14-24mm so thought the Sigma 45mm would go well with that lens and replace my Batis 40mm but I don't think there's enough benefit (mainly size) relative to the time, effort and downsides of swapping out the Batis. That said, great value at this price point and I'd probably grab one if I didn't have the Batis already!

Next purchase for me will likely be the Sigma 24-70mm - fingers crossed that B&H will run a sale on that!

Yeah that's my conclusion too - Sigma is more of a specialized "character" lens and would be nice to have but don't have space for it in my lens line up and putting my money towards the Art zooms first.

Not the best shot, but illustrates why I really like this lens, even though it doesn’t have the absolute aperture too my eye it does a good job at creating separation at mid distance.

Bit pricey at US$400 isn't it?

It's a slow nifty, four hundred is overpriced imo.

Prices are whatever will sell. I felt the same about their earlier $200 30mm F2.8 for APS-C, but I bought it.

I quite like my $79 Yongnuo 50mm F1.4, but it has some issues.

How much is the Voigtländer 50mm F2 Apo-Lanthar? How is the AF performance on it?

How do people manage with Zeiss Otus lenses on SLRs?

Is that the dystopian power plant from the Pink Floyd "Animals" album cover in the background?!

No, the one on the album cover is the Battersea plant which is further West and up the river. This much smaller one is in Greenwich. Good eye though!

Finally got my Marumi +3 from Japan. This significantly reduces spherical aberration (at least wide open) by allowing infinity focus while placing the subject at 13". Peony in my garden:

A7ii, 45C, f/11. I continue to enjoy the handling of this lens, like spinning the aperture ring between f/2.8 for focussing and f/11 for shooting. Having a distance encoder is really helpful for this kind of usage.

I was able to get a good price on this lens (slightly less than the B&H sale price), was very impressed with its performance. At f5.6 to f11, I thought it was as good as my Batis 40mm and a copy of the Voigtlander 50mm APO I tested. This was true both at infinity and for close-up type photographs. I couldn't see a meaningful difference pixel peeping. Note that it is indeed 45mm - the batis 40mm is slightly wider and the voigtlander 50mm is a bit more telephoto.

In many ways, I actually preferred the rendering of the Sigma to the Voigtlander stopped down - vignetting was much less of an issue. Both were sharp and no noticeable CA with good colors.

At f2.8, the lens is definitely a bit soft. I have yet to see a shot I've taken where the slight glow is an advantage and I'm not sure I see the magic yet in the bokeh but it is somewhat smoother than the Batis 40mm. Also, AF-C performance is disappointing but I'm using this mainly with a Sony A7R III for street, cityscape, and landscape type photos so AF-S is generally sufficient.

I kept this over the Batis and Voigtlander since it's the perfect size with AF even if the wide open performance isn't great. I hope Sigma comes up with an equally small 28mm and 90mm for a nice street photography trio.

After much consideration, I just bought this lens for myself for Father's Day...or I bought this for my wife to give to me for Father's Day I have found some things similar to you. First, the background...

I read every thread here, must have read every review online and watched a ton of videos. Opinion is quite varied but I must say, I'm glad I trusted myself -- and Fred's photos and just went for it. Everyone emphasized the lovey build quality and while I've always been a fan of 'haptics', I didn't think I'd enjoy the feel of this lens as much as I do. Very solid yet light. Love the aperture ring. More of this please, Sigma.

I think it was Fred who called it a bit of a 'mini STF' and I must say, he's not wrong. The bokeh is great, smooth with a lot of context but not a lot of hard edges, nervousness or 'bite'. Not my beloved 100STF, but very nice. At f/2.8 it is softer, but I'm not going to say it's soft. Close up? Sure, it glows. But even at selfie style arm's length, it's a sharp lens. Tack sharp? No. Can render my eyelashes sharp? Yup. That surprised me.

Stopped down to f/4 and resolution seems to just explode. Boom. Very sharp. By f/5.6 I'm with tzhang, mine is sharp across the frame. At f/8 and f/11, landscape apertures for me, it's sharp edge to edge corner to corner with no real weaknesses. A great optical performance. As for AF performance, I'm a very undemanding AF user so I can't comment much on that.

So, for me it really is a dual purpose lens. At f/2.8 it is sharp at mid distance, sharp enough at closer distances. It has a lovely rendering and bokeh at f/2.8 and even by f/4, it's critically sharp. By f/8 it's a near perfect landscape lens.

I'm not gonna lie, I do wish it was an f/2, but it's not a deal breaker for me at all. Apart from that and, I guess the AF-C issues which may rear their head in the future, it's a fantastic piece of kit. I'll try to get some photos uploaded soon-ish.
