p.1 #1 · Dancer at the Chicago Riverwalk

Been awhile since I posted. I'm doing a marketing brochure shoot today for Ballet Chicago along the Riverwalk, so this session has been on my mind. Plus, I'm presenting at the ClickCon Photography Conference on Monday and Tuesday on dance photography, and leading a couple of groups on photowalks.

Also, just started the Pas De Deux Photo online community for dance photographers, and announcing our first dance photography conference on Jan. 31-Feb. 2, 2020, at the Arizona Grand in Phoenix. Our featured speakers include Jordan Matter, Rachel Neville, David Hofmann ("sharkcookie" in social media circles), Eric Pare from Canada, and Taylor-Ferne Morris from Australia. I'll be presenting there as well. You can see more info here: http://www.pasdedeuxphoto.com

And now to my pics with Lindsey along the Chicago River:

5. I like doing three perspectives when I get the dancers on top of the LaSalle Bridge. This is a tighter shot with me shooting from the other side of the bridge.

6. This is a wider shot, bringing in the Chicago skyline behind her.

7. And now, I'm on the bridge in the middle of the two lanes directly in front of her, praying I don't get hit by a speeding Uber, and getting a perspective that I really love.

My OCD can't get past the lines that are *almost* true.

In (1) the vertical is about 1 degree off

In (2) shooting more strait on would have allowed top *and* bottom to be aligned

(3) (4) and (7) are awesome with (3) being *far and away* head and shoulders above the rest.

Would have preferred narrower DOF in some of the wider shots, but your lens may not have allowed that

HTH

Thanks, Greg. I"m sorry to hear about your OCD.

I do use the best Nikon lenses that they make, but if there's not a narrower focus, it's usually by choice.

Well, then it is definitely time to switch over to Canon

Nah, they are really nice and narrow DOF on the wider shots is rarely possible.

Ha! Honestly, I really have never believed there is a lot of difference between the Canon and Nikon lenses.

These are beautiful, Ron. I also like number three best. The black and white and the dancer filling the steps, the railing, and the back wall, so beautifully graceful, makes that picture really stand out for me. Her expression is wonderful, too. As always, your work is superb!

Thanks so much, Dave! That's one of my faves, the shot of her on the curving stairs.

You are right Ron. Most all the Japanesse lenses render similarly. You want to step into lenses that have a more unique signature then you need to look into lenses like Zeiss, Leica M, Voigtlander and even one of the old 1950s single coated Soviet Jupiter lenses. Many of those though will not work on DSLRs.

These are incredible shots. The bridge shots make me cringe, though. If she falls forward, she would fall into traffic, no? Do the police ever give you trouble for these types of shots?

you know that new building on the west side of the river near wolf point? its really narrow at the bottom and then flairs up. I always thought it looked a bit like a ballerina on point, maybe shoot from the kinzie bridge to get the ballerina and the building in the same shot?

anyways, great stuff as always. i really like the first one.

Ron, it’s always a treat to see your posts! This is a great series. 3,5 and 7 are the standouts for me, especially 3.

Very nice set. I've seen most of these locations a few times. Thanks for sharing.
