Have we seen this up against the CV 40 or 50 or even the CV classic 35 in E mount

I would be very interested in a direct comparison with the CV 40/1.2 as well.
Not sure if anyone would care (I certainly don't....) but I have the VM 40/1.2 that I use in the Frankenstein rig with the Techart Pro/Fotodiox Pronto and not the native mount version. I could try to do some comparisons but I don't think that's what you guys are actually after.

Yes than it becomes a gimmick. Like to see a nice series that I always do when testing. Get a subject about 7-10 ft away and run the apertures . That way we can see what I bet will look great still is F2
Again I've been around a long time and certain things turn into gimmicks. Fisheye. Fun lens got over abused. Can happen with any Mojo type lens. You just have to watch yourself
I do love the look but watch where you use it too. I don't critic anyone's work unless I'm asked but what I see so far looks delicious. Just pick subjects that work like that. I know what I would do shooting is do both take the 1.2 and take the F4 or 2.8 get used to the lens and how it can produce. Than take advantage of it.

I rented the lens for a week - and Guy's bet is correct. It looked great at f2. I probably won't end up buying it because of the weight, but if I were a professional photographer I would have already bought it. . . .

Mind you the extra resolution we've got these days helps to justify the weight of these heavy primes. On an A7r4, I'm sure this lens would be a great 52mm f/2 equivalent in crop mode. In which case I may as well leave the 50/1.4 at home...
I love all my primes, but truth be told, an A7r4 with a Batis 18, Sigma 35/1.2 and Sony 85/1.4, with the use of crop mode, would probably cover 90%+ of my needs.

This thread really makes me wish I loved the 35mm FOV.

I almost feel like the bokeh is TOO smooth. Is there such a thing?
This does bring up an interesting thing about Sigma lenses, though.
I'm curious: does anyone else think that Sigma blur has more of a gaussian flavor than your average lens?
Sometimes when the background and subject are at certain relative distances it looks like a blur filter has been applied to the latter. Maybe I'm cross-eyed from looking at too many images, but I've heard this opinion from other folks too, so I don't think I'm crazy. There aren't any perfect examples on this page but the second, fifth, and perhaps fourth images of Bastian's last sequence come close to illustrating what I mean.
Surely part of it is the lack of transitional elements in the composition (between subject and background), but I don't notice this effect with other lenses/brands, so I don't think that explains everything....

Man I think my copy is all defective...the aperture is stuck hard on f/1.2...I managed to move it to f/11, but it immediately slammed right back to f/1.2

Damn, the weight is holding me back. 35 mm is very much THE lens for me hence I will take this lens everywhere; photo trips, family holidays, street photography etc.
Taking the "only" 750 grams Zony 50/1.4 does require extra motivation at times.
Not a good report, but the images here are spectacularly good. Lensrentals will have their review in about a weeks time which will be based on multiple copies of the lens

I rented a copy from LensRentals.com. It was spectacularly good. That said, it had some focus issues in single point AF at infinity focus on an A7RIII. I made some spectacularly sharp images at infinity focus in single point AF, but it was inconsistent. I expect I would have figured out how to use it to make infinity single point autofocus consistent over time, but it was only a one week rental. I had no focus issues at all in continuous autofocus, which is the most obvious use of the lens.
