I have been trying to get a really good image of a common nighthawk as he flies low over a stock pond for a drink. These birds fly very eratically until just before they get low enough to get a drink. At that point they turn their wings and slow and stable to get a drink. Up until now the best I have done is with a 70-200 f2.8 on my D500. I have tried with little success with lenses such as my Sigma 160-600 sport and my 500pf. Last night I used the 300pf and got probably my best shot of a nighthawk getting a drink. Out of over 100 images from last night, this 4 shot series was my best.

Congrats on your efforts, I do not believe I have ever seen this on the nature board before.

Very cool sequence! We sometimes see them in migration but almost never in their normal situation.

Thats outrageous! Super sweet captures, never saw an image of one in flight let alone this sequence. So it is a drink and not going after an insect or water creature? This is really awesome and you have earned my vote!

Yes they come down and get a drink out of the pond. They usually fly higher to feed. Very agile.
