I'd say that combo is not too shabby. The 2.8 certainly helps. If I put the TC on my 5.6, that would be big trouble if not really bright outside. The chipmunk shot is superb. Well done on them all.

Rob,
Fantastic set. I have used a unit with the 1.4x TC. Am in love with it and waiting until Canon announces the new bodies. Had used the 2X TC with the mark II. I am sure your technique has brought the best out of this lens. Thanks for sharing.

That was the issue I had with the 400mm DO, the 2x was f8 and it slowed the AF down a lot, which made it tough for BIF. This lens just works with the extenders.

I voted as well. If you told me these images were without converter I would definitely believe you and still be impressed. It's frankly shocking that these are with the 2x TC!

Thanks for the vote, I agree I am shocked with the 2x performance too. Best performing lens with the 2x hands down that I have used.

Damn... I'm wondering, these days, whether I should buy a (Nikon) 400/2.8, and then Rob shows this
Argh, that's gonna cost me money. Even if I swing back to the initial 500/4 idea...
On topic: These are outstanding! OK, the lens seems to perform, the camera focused correctly, but: Hey, these show it's all about the photographer! Rob had to find the spot, bring the gear, wait, and release that shutter in these perfect moments! Great job!

Thanks for the kind words, sorry about costing you money

No problem, I still could jump off...
I Nikon land, the elder 400/2.8 weights a ton, the new one is simply not available... So it'll take time to spend cash... And then, there's this 500/5.6...
