Rendering comparison with FE 24/1.4 GM and Loxia 21/2.8 Distagon

Out of the camera. Only sharpening setting for both lenses. (identical exposure and histogram level)
The FE 24/1.4 GM is smoother but the plane of focus is not as contrasty as the Voigtlander (micro-contrast).
Different color rendering as well.

At close distance, which rendering do you prefer?

Voigt 21/1.4 (top), 24/1.4 GM (bottom)

Area of focus for image above. (notice the transition zone)

The CV 21/1.4's rendering is more structured

Same close-up scene above at f/2.8 compared to Loxia 21/2.8.

Out of Focus Rendering: Area of focus: Voigtlander 21/1.4 compared to Loxia 21/2.8 (both at f/2.8)

Area of focus: Voigtlander 21/1.4 compared to Loxia 21/2.8 (both at f/2.8). To my eye, the Voigtlander is sharper and more contrasty at close distance. (Yes, I focused the Loxia right. :))

Me too but I also like the Voigtlander contrast and color rendering.
Keep in mind that the Voigtlander imagers will have less blur since it's a wider FL and they were shot at same distance. (~0.4m)

Did you set wb manually?

Yes, in-camera Daylight.

The Sony 24mm GM lens has a much smoother transition than the CV 21mm f1.4

Here is a sample at about 1m.

It's a great way to see the FL difference between these lenses. Everything is the same (WB), exposure and sharpening.
There is a distinctive difference in rendering. The Voigtlander has higher contrast and bolder colors. The GM is flatter in comparison but has smoother rendering...

Sunstar Rendering:

I didn't get much ghosting flare but there is a persistent purple blob that like to show up at certain angles. Changing the angle slightly gets rid of it.

The Voigtlander 21/1.4 Nokton is capable of defined sunstars from f/1.6 and it's very decent at f/2.8 and smaller apertures.

f/2.8: Can't get this sunstar definition with the Loxia 21 @f/2.8

f/3.5

Man, 21 is right there with the 24GM. That said I like the rendering of the 24 better. Combined with having AF 24 stay's in my bag. I'll just admire images from the 21 from afar

Coma (Sagittal Flare)

The CV 21/1.4 Nokton has good coma performance at least 1-stop from wide open. At about f/2.2 coma became acceptable and it's optimal at f/2.8. It does not match the outstanding coma performance from the FE 24/1.4 GM which has great coma performance from wide open. Compared to the Loxia 21/2.8, it matches its wide open performance at about f/2.2 or f/2.5.

At f/1.4 coma is very evident but gets greatly improved at f/2

Nice improvement from f/2 to f/2.2. Some would consider the f/2.2 performance already acceptable for astro

From f/2.2 to f/2.5, it improves slightly

from f/2.5 to f/2.8 another very slight improvement

At f/2.8, it has better coma correction compared to the Loxia 21/2.8 wide open

Street lights towards the very corner coma comparison between apertures:

As seen above, f/1.4-1.8 should be avoided with this lens but f/2.2 and f/2.5 look good.

At f/2.2, it matches the performance of the Loxia wide open. (f/2.8)

When both Voigtlander and Loxia at set to f/2.8, the former shows better coma performance

Ha, after all these comparisons, I appreciate my GM 24 more. One day I'll find a good reason to add this CV into the bag :P.

It's true. The GM 24 is outstanding for astro. Lower coma and lower vignetting. It's about a stop better than the new Voigtlander but 24mm is not 21mm.

I'm surprised it did better than the Loxia 21/2.8. (also by almost a stop)

The 24/1.4 GM is already great from wide open (f/1.4)
