p.1 #1 · Water ski sportraits

Changed it up this year and shot my family week of skiing with just a Nikon D500 and 105mm, f1.4E. Proved to be a nice combo.

1. Wife carving it up.

2. My daughter got a new ski this year. This shot at f1.6

3. Cool reflection.

All nice, but (3) is magazine worthy *if* you have the entire reflection in the original image.

First shot is my fav. The extra tilt and the big smile helps. Last one is good too.

Thanks, Greg. Sadly, I have no more of that reflection. I shoot these in landscape orientation with all the lateral movement. The height is pretty tight at 105mm on a D500

Thanks, Jim. My wife is a pretty good skier and kicks up a lot of water. She usually has a big smile on her face which helps the photos.

Great set. Looks like a lot of fun.

I'm especially disappointed in the last image. I was expecting another really nice landscape image with a large out-of-focus blob in the foreground. The trees and water usually look so nice.

Great memory!

I think the shorter lens (105mm) on a D500 made the picture taking more manageable for my daughter. I usually use a 70-200mm, f2.8 on a full frame body for these. The focus tracking on the D500 is excellent. She got quite a few shots of me in focus despite my erratic and clumsy skiing.

These are really spectacular. Great form, great expressions, great composition, great color, and very sharp.

Nice job all around. It's great that your daughter can take over the camera, another good reason to get the next generation involved!

Very nice shots. With the exception of no 5 it looks like all these where taken from somewhere other than from the boat which helps. Looks like everyone was enjoying themselves. Rope looks rather high to me, was the rope on a wakeboard tower rather than standard ski rope height?

I just noticed you are in Clearwater, I am in Trinity 30 minutes away. If you don't mind me asking what lake is this?

Hello, neighbor! These were taken at Callaway Gardens in Georgia. We don't ski locally, do you? The best lakes we've found nearby are west of Orlando.

These were all taken from the boat. Unfortunately, the week we skied this year the ski boat was out of service. We wound up skiing on a hybrid boat with the rope on the tower. Much higher than we prefer particularly for photos. Many shots had the rop crossing or near faces and were not salvageable.

I ski in Lake Parker (also known as Lake Ann), southern end of Pasco Co, sadly only a few times this summer, left shoulder is bothering me and I don't want to aggravate it. My oldest son has had some good fun wakeboarding though. The lake is often too busy at weekends for good water, gets less busy by Oct/Nov. I'll send you a message, maybe you'd be interested in getting together for a ski/photo session later in the year?
