Also find it hard to get my head around "all time". Too many lenses; too much time.

I'll name two predictable choices firsts: the RX1 Sonnar and the Canon 50L.

Both have a knack for helping mundane images feel a bit special and will push excellent captures into the realm of amazing.

The third is an odd choice by most standards:

The 24-70 GM. "Just a zoom" but I have taken thousands of really nice images with it and that counts for a lot.

Of course the Sony bodies helped make that happen.

I'm conflicted, and it shows in my inventory of lenses.

AF, or MF?

Best ever, most useful, most appealing rendering according to subject, . . . ?

Top of the list of First World problems!

I can narrow the choices to four brands:

Sony -- I love the Loxia 21, 35 and 50 in MF, and 24-105/4G and 12-24/4G for AF.

Canon -- I love all my top EF "L" lenses -- 17/4 TS-E, 24/3.5 TS-E II, 16-35/4 IS, 24-70/2.8 II, 70-200/4, 35/1.4, 50/1.2, 100/2.8 IS macro.

Then there are the Sigma Art in Canon EF-mount 24/1.4 and 50/1.4 -- makes me want the 35/1.4 next.

I love the MF Zeiss "Classic" ZE-mount 18/3.5, 25/2, 28/2, and 35/2. Can't stop thinking about possibly getting a Milvus in either 35 or 50.

The Canon, Sigma, and Zeiss ZE all use Sigma MC-11 adapter on Sony a7R2 (or mount directly on Canon DSLRs, such as my 5DsR or 1Ds3).

I like how the question was ambiguous and just said "your top 3" rather than "your 3 best" lenses. Leaves a lot of room for individuals to draw a distinction.

For instance, someone mentioned the G90. I owned one for a while and it certainly is a great lens in a lot of ways. Small, light, RIDICULOUSLY sharp. By those metrics, it was the best 90mm I've ever used. However, the handling via adapter sucked. Add to that, on the rare occasions I'd use a 90mm, it would be for portraits, and the G90 has wayyyy too much gritty microcontrast to shoot adult skin. And the Bokeh was extremely temperamental, nice sometimes, harsh others. So, while I enjoyed it, it got far less use than the Tamron Adaptall 90/2.5 SP Macro I also owned (should have kept that one DOH!)

Similarly, I wouldn't claim that the Elmarit 28 Asph is THE BEST lens out there (on digital anyway) but the size, weight and handling are a dream, so any possible shortcomings that one could notice when pixel-peeping are overshadowed by what it's like to use in the field.

Exactly, my intention was about the enjoyment factor of using said lenses. People say camera and lenses are just tools and largely they are. But as you get to know said tools more, you might get attached to them because of certain qualities (that's why I love to read why people chose their top 3 lenses). I do echo some of what people said here that their top 3 are constantly changing. As much as I enjoy shooting with the current Sony lenses, there are things I still want to improve on that prompt me to switch. It's not so much about the IQ anymore but more along the line of the user experience such as: AF speed, weight and size, ease of filter use, and even just some nifty features (e.g. built-in hood, focus tab, function button/ring...). Heck, it could even be the thrill of shooting expensive/rare lenses that most other owners don't even use them.

I only use Nikon F so far, but these are clearly my two best lenses:

Zeiss "Distagon" 35mm f2 ZF

Nikkor AF 180mm f2.8

Cant decide what to pick for third spot. Voigtländer Nokton 58mm f1.4 SLii ? Nikkor AF 105mm f2 DC ? Nikkor AF 60mm f2.8 micro ? Tokina 100mm f2.8 macro ? Ideally I'd combine the above two lenses with a Nikkor AF-S 24mm f1.8, but I dont actually own that one yet.

For my style of photography

28E
58/1.4G
105/1.4E

are superb and are my all time favorites. My litmus test is that I have not acquired another lens in the last 8 months looking for another "holy grail" lens. I think when you are not quite content you search for the elusive lens to fill the gap.

With Leica

35 FLE
M 50 Nocti f/1.0
75 Lux

It is interesting that with time, you may visit some of the older lenses and feel different about them.

Congrats Charles for finally being at that "happy" stage. I'm getting there myself. I certainly don't feel the need for another camera body after the A9.

Always love your work. I"m interested in why you picked these two, which seem to be mainly for portraiture.

^^ I think because everything below 85 is a constantly revolving door. I use both those lenses for selective focus and landscapes.

I am a huge fan of Canon Magic Drainpipes (80-200/2.8) but have moved on to Contax Zeiss's 100-300 which I fully expect to keep forever.

My current favorite 50 is the old Contax 50/1.4 Not the best by any means but always surprises me and adapts well on the GFX50s. My favorite 50 on the Sony a7r2 is the 50/1.4 Sony FE. For reasons unknown I found a used insanely sharp copy which renders beautifully.

I use to crave the Zeiss 21/2.8 ZE on my Canon bodies and then on the A7r2, but went with convenience ie the Sony 16-35/4. The 28 Otus is sitting in the back corner of my gear closet since it doesn't adapt well on the GFX50s

The wide angle of the moment is the Fuji GF 23mm, but haven't had it long enough to "Best" it.

I dig Zeiss. It would be a mix of Otus and high-end Milvus lenses dominating here.

My favourite wide angle lens is the C/Y 2.8 28mm (own both AE and MM). The weakness of that lens is the corner sharpness, the strength the rendering. Would be nice to see a comparison with the Pentax K 3.5 28mm!!!

My favourite lens in the range 50-60mm is the C/Y 35-70mm. It beat all the alt lenses like C/Y 1.7 50mm, Pentax M 1.7 50mm, Yashinon 2 50mm imo. The only lens I have that comes close is the C/Y 2.8 60mm Macro. Would be nice to see a comparison between the C/Y 35-70 and the Voigtlander 60mm APO Macro!!!

My favourite short tele is the C/Y 1.4 85mm AEG. Very nice and sharp lens from f 2 on. Sharper than my C/Y 3.5 100mm. Very nice bokeh and rendering. A Zeiss classic. Would be nice to see a comparison with the Sony GM 1.4 85mm!!

For the 35mm I would like to see a comparison between the C/Y 2.8 35mm and the Minolta MD III 2.8 35mm and Sony RX1

I guess a lens passes the test of "timelessness" if it makes the user stop looking for / wanting / considering other comparable lenses. For me, one such lens was the Canon 16-35/4 IS. The 70-200/2.8 IS slightly less so as, though I never questioned its utility and quality, I was (guilty of ) considering the update to ver.2 or the similar Tamron. Finally, the 100-400/4.5-5.6 L IS lens is another notch down in my rating, as in that while it gave me the ability to shoot unique frames and has been eminently useful, I fully acknowledge its (few) weaknesses, such as the IS which is not very effective, and the missing weather sealing. If I had had a small fortune to spend, I would have surely jumped at the second version, but since this is not the case, I fully expect the ver.1 specimen I have to stay with me for awhile, possibly until the end.

Some good candidates for top 3 for me:

1) 21/3.5 OM probably my most used on film? Mine isn't even that good optically. But I don't really care that much. Great FL.

2) 55-250 IS Really used this lens a lot. Probably my most used after I bought it, until it wound up in the stream (along with me) a few months ago. Kinda worn out anyway had been considering a replacement. Had haze, probably from getting it wet before the stream

Really great close focus, closer on aps than a 1:2 macro on ff. Plus it zoomed.

3) 180 Tamron. Usually with 1.4. Another of my most heavily used lenses. I love the close focusing ability. Excellent optics.

1. Zeiss Otus 55/1.4 - Nice redering and bokeh. More or less free of CA (of all kinds).
2. Sony GM 85/1.4 - Similar to the Otus. High contrast, sharp wide open and nice bokeh. Small amounts of SLOCA.
3. 7Artisans 28/1.4 - Surprisingly good! If the same lens would have been a Zeiss they could easily have charged 2-3 times higher price. It's sharp, minor CA, nice bokeh and rendering.

I have to say, I’ve shot more lenses than I care to count. Something about the focus of the CV 58/1.4 was just magical. I liked but didn’t love it’s rendering wide open, but I didn’t really care. I just wanted to focus on things, didn’t care about taking the picture. So Smooooooooooth...
